목회서신: 창립49주년, 새로운 길을 향하여

사랑하는 교우 여러분, 주님의 이름으로 문안 드립니다.

우리 교회가 이 땅에 세워진 지 어느덧 49년, 반세기가 흘렀습니다. 1977년 3월, 로렌스의 작은 예배에서 시작된 공동체가 오늘에 이르기까지 이어질 수 있었던 것은 전적으로 하나님의 은혜입니다. 지난 세월 동안 교회를 위해 눈물로 기도하고, 묵묵히 헌신하며 교회를 지켜 오신 믿음의 선배들과 모든 성도님들 모두에게 깊은 감사의 마음을 전합니다. 여러분 한 분 한 분의 헌신이 오늘의 교회를 이루며 여기까지 오게 하셨습니다.

초창기 이민의 시절에 교회는 단순한 예배당이 아니었습니다. 낯선 땅에서 언어도 문화도 익숙하지 않았던 우리에게 교회는 눈물을 닦아주는 가족이었고, 고단한 삶을 내려놓는 쉼터였으며, 자녀들에게 믿음을 전하는 신앙의 요람이었습니다. 그렇게 하나님은 지난 49년의 세월 동안 우리와 함께 하시며 우리와 함께 일하셨습니다.

지난 50년, 지나온 역사를 돌아보면 감사가 넘치지만, 동시에 앞으로의 걸어 가야 할 길을 함께 모색해야 하는 중요한 시점에 서 있습니다. “너희는 이전 일을 기억하지 말며 옛날 일을 생각하지 말라. 보라 내가 새 일을 행하리니 이제 나타낼 것이라.” (이사야 43:18–19) 지금까지 베푸신 하나님의 은혜도 감사하지만, 하나님이 앞으로 우리들을 통해서 행하실 새로운 일에 가슴이 벅차며 소망 중에 기다립니다.

교우 여러분, 세월이 흐르면서 세상도, 이민 사회도 많이 변했습니다. 한때 한인 교회는 이민자들의 중심이었지만, 이제 한국도 역이민이 많아 질 만큼 시대가 변했습니다. 항상 변화는 위기가 아니라 하나님께서 새롭게 일하시는 방식입니다.

저는 담임목사로서 다시 여러분 곁으로 돌아와 지난 2년동안 우리 교회가 앞으로 나아가야 할 방향을 함께 모색하며 기도해 왔습니다. 저는 확신합니다. 49년 전 하나님이 우리들을 통해서 일하셨던 것처럼, 앞으로도 우리 교회를 통해 이 땅의 한인 공동체와 다음 세대에게 큰 일일 우리를 통해 일하실 것을 믿습니다. 걱정하지 맙시다. 실망도 하지 맙시다. 새로운 길을 간다는 것은 걱정스럽고 또 벅찬 일입니다. 광야에 길을 내시고 사막에 강을 내시는 주님과 함께 새 길을 열어 갑시다.

정해진 것은 아무것도 없습니다. 지금까지 2년동안 교회를 담임하면서 여러분의 의견을 듣고, 연회와 상의하며 다음과 같은 선택이 놓여 있습니다.

교회건물에 대한 여러가지 문제를 능동적으로 해결하는 데에는 한계가 있습니다. 연로하신 교우들이 많고, 아직 자립하기에는 시간이 필요한 EM입니다. (교회수리에 70만불-100만불 필요) 교회는 전반적인 교회 수리와 시설 개선을 필요로 하고, 주차장 물 문제, 교단 선교분담금과 건물 보험료 과제, 현상을 유지는 해 나가고 있으나, 교회의 본연 과제인 선교와 사역을 펼치는데 한계가 있습니다.

동시에 희망적인 현상이 일어나고 있습니다. 대부분의 교회가 결여된, 20-30대 영어권 회중 EM이 부흥하고 있고, 교회 재정의 1/3을 담당해 주고 있습니다. 주일학교와 그들의 부모인 30-40대 부부의 친교와 교회사역의 참여가 늘고 있습니다. 앞으로 4년간 EM 사역을 위해서 감리교 교단으로부터 10만불의 지원을 받을 수 있게 되었습니다.

현재 우리가 안고 있는 과제들을 해결하기 위해서는 다음 두가지 큰 방향이 있습니다. 첫째, 현상태를(하프타임) 유지하면서 당분간 건물유지에 대한 재정적인 큰 부담을 안고 교회의 부흥을 위해 온 교회가 매진하는 것입니다. 둘째, 주변 미국연합감리교회와 연합하는 방안입니다. 그렇게 되면 40년 넘게 이곳을 지켜온 교우들에게는 그동안 보금자리가 되어 주었던 교회를 떠나야 할 수도 있습니다.

이런 가능성 타진을 위해 이웃 두 교회와 연합예배를 드릴 예정입니다. 3월 29일 Old South UMC와 연합예배 (10:30) 그리고4월 5일 First UMC와 부활절 연합예배를 드리며 두 번 째 가능성을 타진해 보려 합니다.

다시 말씀드리자면 정해진 것은 아직 하나도 없습니다. 모든 것은 투명하게 공개 될 것이고, 절차에 따라 진행할 것입니다. 모든 것들을 여러분과 충분히 의논을 드린 후 여러분이 결정할 것입니다. 저는 담임목사로서 여러분이 모든 정보를 공유하고, 의견이 모아지도록 도울 뿐입니다. 무엇보다도 중요한 것은 우리 교회의 미래를 위해 모두의 의견을 하나로 모아 가는 것이며, 이는 기도 가운데 이루어 질 것입니다.

우리 교회가 지나온 지난 49년은 단순한 숫자가 아닙니다. ‘7’이라는 완전수가 일곱 번 반복된 시간입니다. 우리 하나님께서 우리를 위해 얼마나 신실하게 일해오셨는지를 증명하는 ‘거룩한 마침표’와 같습니다.

하지만 지금 우리는 익숙했던 길은 희미해지고, 사방이 막힌 것 같은 답답함을 느낄 수도 있습니다. 희년(Jubilee)은 바로 그때 시작되었습니다. 50년이 되는 희년은 내 힘으로 움켜쥐던 것을 내려놓고, 원래 주인 되신 하나님께 모든 것을 되돌리는 해입니다. 창립 49주년, 이제 희년을 맞는 우리 교회, 모든 것이 멈추고 소망이 끊어진 것 같을 때, 하나님은 새로운 시작을 하심을 믿습니다.

오는 주일, 창립 49주년을 맞는 축하예배가 11:30분에 EM과 함께 드립니다. 이날 우리는 강성미 김은주 두 분 권사님이 취임하시고, 김수정, 서정연, 최진이 세분의 집사님 임명식도 있습니다. 예배후에는 만찬이 있습니다.

사랑하는 교우 여러분, 두려워하지 말고 주님의 인도하심 따라 함께 갑시다. 낡은 부대를 벗어 던지고, 성령의 새 술을 담는 역동적인 공동체로 앞으로 우리의 50년은 지나온 과거보다 더욱 찬란할 것입니다. 위기라는 구름 뒤에 숨은 하나님의 ‘새 일’을 기대합니다. 49년의 눈물이 50년의 찬송이 될 것입니다. 여러분, 우리 다시 시작합시다!

At the Threshold of 50 Years—Jubilee and a New Way Forward

“You shall count seven Sabbath years—seven times seven years—so that the period of the seven Sabbath years amounts to forty-nine years… Then you shall consecrate the fiftieth year and proclaim liberty throughout the land to all its inhabitants.” (Leviticus 25:10)

Dear beloved members,

Greetings to you in the name of the Lord.

It has now been 49 years—nearly half a century—since our church was first established. From a small worship gathering in Lawrence in March 1977 to where we are today, it has been entirely by God’s grace that this community has continued. I offer my deep gratitude to all who have prayed with tears, served faithfully, and upheld this church through the years. Each one of your sacrifices has brought us to this day.

In the early years of immigration, the church was more than a place of worship. In a foreign land, unfamiliar in language and culture, the church became a family that wiped away tears, a place of rest for weary lives, and a cradle of faith for our children. Through these 49 years, God has been with us and has worked among us.

As we look back on the past 50 years, our hearts are full of gratitude. At the same time, we now stand at an important moment where we must seek together the path ahead. “Do not remember the former things… See, I am doing a new thing.” (Isaiah 43:18–19) While we give thanks for all that God has done, we also look forward with hope and expectation to the new things God will do through us.

Dear members, times have changed. The world and the immigrant community are very different from before. Korean churches were once the center of immigrant life, but now even reverse migration to Korea is increasing. Change is not a crisis; it is often the way God works in new ways.

As your senior pastor, I have spent the past two years praying and discerning with you about the future direction of our church. I am confident that just as God worked through us 49 years ago, God will continue to do great things through our church for the Korean community and the next generation. Let us not be anxious or discouraged. A new path may feel uncertain, but we go forward with the Lord who makes a way in the wilderness and streams in the desert.

We face real challenges: significant building repairs (estimated at $700,000–$1,000,000), parking lot drainage issues, denominational Mission Share Fund, and insurance costs. While we are maintaining our current situation, these burdens limit our ability to fully carry out mission and ministry.

At the same time, there are encouraging signs. Our English Ministry (EM), especially among young adults in their 20s and 30s, is growing and now contributes about one-third of our finances. Participation from young families and Sunday school is also increasing. In addition, we have secured $100,000 in support from the denomination over the next four years for EM ministry.

At this time, no final decisions have been made. Over the past two years, after listening to your voices and consulting with the conference, we are considering two main directions:

First, we may maintain our current structure (part-time ministry), carrying the financial burden of maintaining the building while focusing together on church growth.

Second, we may pursue a partnership with a nearby United Methodist Church. This could mean leaving the building that has been our home for over 49 years—a difficult decision for many.

To explore the second option, we will hold joint worship services with two neighboring churches:

March 29 at 10:30 AM: Joint service with Old South UMC in Reading

April 5 at 10:30 AM: Easter joint service with First UMC in North Andover

Let me emphasize again: nothing has been decided. Everything will be shared transparently and carried out through proper process. We will discuss all matters together, and you will make the final decisions. My role is to ensure that all information is shared and that your voices are heard. Above all, what matters most is that we come together in unity and prayer for the future of our church.

The past 49 years are not just a number. It is seven cycles of seven—a symbol of completeness. It is like a holy period marking God’s faithfulness to us.

Yet now, we may feel uncertain, as if the familiar path is fading and we are surrounded by challenges. This is exactly where Jubilee begins. The fiftieth year is a time to release what we hold tightly and return everything to God, the true owner. As we approach our Jubilee, even when it feels like everything has stopped, we believe God is beginning something new.

This coming Sunday, we will celebrate our 49th anniversary at 11:30 AM together with EM. During the service, two Exhorting Stewards, EunJu Kim and Sungmi Kang will be installed, and three deacons will be appointed. A fellowship meal will follow.

Dear members, let us not be afraid. Let us move forward together under the Lord’s guidance. Let us set aside the old and become a dynamic community that receives the new work of the Spirit. Our next 50 years will be even more glorious than the past. Behind what seems like a crisis, God is preparing something new. The tears of 49 years will become songs of praise in the 50th.
