감리교 창시자 요한 웨슬리 John Wesley (1703–1791)
디트리히 본회퍼는 독일의 루터교 목사이자 신학자, 그리고 작가였다. 그는 히틀러와 나치 정권에 맞서 싸운 사람으로 잘 알려져 있다.
존 웨슬리는 사무엘과 수산나 웨슬리의 신앙 깊은 성공회 가정에서 태어났다. 그는 옥스퍼드에서 공부했고, 곧 성공회 목사로 안수받았다.
이후 감리교 운동을 시작한 그는 두 가지 거룩함을 강조했다. 하나는 하나님과의 관계가 자라가는 개인적인 거룩함, 다른 하나는 어려운 사람들을 돌보며 사랑을 실천하는 사회적인 거룩함이다.
오늘 우리는 이 둘 중 하나만 중요하게 생각하기 쉽지만, 사실 이 둘은 함께 가야 한다. 어려운 이웃을 위해 자신을 내어주지 않고서는 참된 개인의 거룩함도 자랄 수 없고,
그리스도 안에서 사는 삶은 자연스럽게 다른 사람을 돕고자 하는 마음으로 이어진다.
웨슬리는 평생 가난한 사람들을 돕기 위해 다섯 가지 사역을 발전시켰다. 가장 가난하고 일할 수 없는 사람들을 위한 음식, 옷, 주거 제공, 작은 사업을 시작하거나 유지할 수 있도록 재료와 자금 지원, 가난한 아이들을 위한 학교, 성인 문자해독 교육, 무료 의료 서비스다. 또한 그는 열정적인 노예제 반대자로서, 노예무역을 “모든 악행의 집합”이라고 강하게 비판했다. 존 웨슬리는 평생 경건생활을 하면서 늘 이웃을 도우며 살았다. 이 두 가지 중 하나도 소홀히 하지 않고 산 것이 감리교 전통이 되었고, 이것이 감리교회의 DNA다.

John Wesley

John Wesley was born into the devout Anglican home of Samuel and Susanna Wesley. He attended Oxford and was soon ordained as an Anglican minister. Later, as the founder of the Methodist movement, John Wesley emphasized two types of holiness: personal holiness, which is growing your personal relationship with God, and social holiness, which is showing love to others through caring for the needy. We today focus on one or the other. But these two go hand in hand. We cannot grow in personal holiness without giving of ourselves to those in need and our life in Christ necessarily leads to the will to help other people. During his life and ministry, Wesley developed five kinds of programs to serve the poor: Food, clothing, and shelter for the most destitute, those unable to work; Materials and seed money to start up small businesses or to keep businesses from closing; Schools for the children of the poor; Literacy programs for adults; Free medical clinics for the poor. John Wesley himself was an ardent abolitionist and had spoken out forcibly against slavery, repeatedly referring to the slave trade as the “execrable sum of all villainies.”
