목회서신 - 5월 22일
사랑하는 교우님들께
지난주 교인 총회에서 우리 교회가 First UMC로 이전하기로 최종 결정되었습니다. 현 건물을 매각하는 구체적인 방법은 조금 더 시간을 두고 신중하게 살펴보기로 했습니다. 교회를 위해 소중한 의견을 나누어 주시고, 교회의 더 좋은 결정을 위해 한마음으로 협조해 주신 모든 교우들께 진심으로 감사드립니다.
이전과 더불어 서로를 더 깊이 알아가고 아름다운 교제와 친교를 나누고자 연합예배를 드립니다. 다가오는 주일(5월 24일)은 First UMC에서 오전 10시 30분에 함께 예배를 드리며, 6월 28일은 여름성경학교 수료 발표회와 함께 우리 교회에서 연합예배로 모일 예정입니다.
새로운 시작은 설레는 일이기도 하지만, 한편으로는 기존의 방식을 바꿔야 하는 불편함도 따르기 마련입니다. 인간에게는 불편한 일을 자연스레 피하려는 마음이 있기도 합니다. 하지만 좋은 교회는 처음부터 만들어져 있는 것이 아니며, 누군가 대신 만들어 주지도 않습니다. 건강하고 좋은 교회는 바로 우리 자신, 그리고 ‘나’로부터 시작해 함께 만들어가는 것입니다.
다소 불편함이 있더라도 우리가 기쁘게 감수하고 더 적극적으로 참여할 때, 마침내 모두가 평안하고 행복한 교회를 이룰 수 있습니다. 26세의 젊은 나이에 결혼하여 태평양을 건너온 헨리 아펜젤러(Henry G. Appenzeller, 1858~1902) 선교사님을 기억합니다. 가난하고 어둠에 싸인 한국 땅에 복음을 전하고 교회와 학교를 세우기까지, 그분이 겪으셨을 불편함과 고초는 이루 말할 수 없었을 것입니다. 그 불편을 감내하고 우리에게 복음의 씨앗을 심어준 선진들을 생각하면, 우리가 교회 연합과 연합예배에서 겪는 작은 불편함은 비교할 수 없을 만큼 작습니다. 더욱 풍성한 사역을 펼쳐 나갈 우리 교회를 기대하며, 함께 기도하고 마음을 모아 주시기를 부탁드립니다.
이번 주일, First UMC에서 반갑게 뵙겠습니다.

Let us grow together through our joint worship services and build meaningful relationships in Christ!
At last week’s church conference, we made the final decision to relocate our church to First United Methodist Church. We also decided to take more time in considering the best way to sell our current church building. Thank you to everyone who shared your thoughts and opinions for the good of the church. Even when there were different viewpoints, you showed respect, unity, and cooperation for the sake of a better decision for our congregation.
To get to know one another better and to strengthen our fellowship, we have decided to hold joint worship services together. This coming Sunday, May 24, we will worship together at First UMC at 10:30 a.m. Then on June 28, after Vacation Bible School and the children’s presentation, we will hold another joint worship service at our church.
New changes can be exciting, but they also require us to leave familiar ways behind, and that is not always easy. Naturally, people tend to avoid discomfort a change. But a good church does not simply appear on its own, and no one else can build it for us. A healthy and loving church is something we build together. In fact, each one of us helps shape the church.
Let us be willing to accept some inconvenience, participate more actively, and together build a church that will become welcoming, healthy, and joyful for everyone.
We remember missionaries such as Henry G. Appenzeller, who came across the Pacific Ocean to Korea at the age of 26 in 1885 with his wife to share the Gospel. Korea at that time was poor and filled with hardship and darkness. How uncomfortable and difficult his life must have been! Yet he endured those hardships to bring the Gospel, establish churches, and build schools for future generations. When we think of the sacrifices made by those who came before us, the small discomforts that may come with church unity and joint worship are nothing in comparison.
Let us continue to pray, cooperate, and work together so that our church may become a stronger church that can serve God and our community more faithfully.
