부활의 기쁨으로 하나 된 우리 교회 위에 하나님의 평화가 넘치기를 기도합니다.

우리 교회는 이제 우리 교회 미래를 위한 중요한 결정을 앞두고 있습니다. 결정에 앞서 우리 교회의 미래를 위해 어떤 결정을 하는 것이 좋을지 허심탄회하게 오는 주일 예배 후 전 교인이 모여 함께 모여 논의 하고자 합니다. 논의 해야 할 내용은 다음과 같습니다.

현재 우리 교회 상황

동성애 문제로 인한 분열의 아픔을 겪은 지 2년이 지났습니다. 주일 예배에는 약 30-40명이 정기적으로 참석하고 계십니다. EM 사역은 활발히 성장 중이며 주일예배 참석 인원은 30-50명 내외입니다. 주일학교는 10명에서 15명정도이고, 30-50대 사이에 청장년이 10가정 정도 입니다. 총 주일예배 참석 인원은 90-110명정도 입니다.

우리 교회가 풀타임 목회자를 모시기 위한 예산과 (최저급여, 교육비, 건강보험,연금과 목사관제공) 부교역자들(주일학교, 중고등부, EM 사역자들)을 위한 예산, 그리고 반주자, 건물 유지와 보험료, 연회선교비를 모두 합쳐 대략 25만불-28만불 가량이 필요합니다. 현재 매 주간 헌금은 $2,500-$3,500 범위로, 18만불의 수입 예산이 책정되어 있습니다. EM은 헌금의 약 1/3을 기여하며, 교회 리더십 참여도 점차 증가하고 있습니다. 하프타임으로 담임목사를 초빙한다 해도 20만불-22만불 정도가 필요하며, 2만불에서 4만불정도의 헌금이 더 필요합니다.

게다가 건물에 문제가 생기면 보수할 여력이 없어 따로 헌금을 해야 합니다. 현재 건물 개선해야 할 것들은 다음과 같습니다.

• 건물 전체에 심각한 누수 발생, (겨울 눈·얼음 축적 시와 여름 폭우 시)
• 주차장 유지보수로 이웃 민원으로 잠재적 법적 위험 (임시 차단 막 설치중)
• 예배당 창문 수리 필요 (바람이 강한 날 유리 낙하 위험)
• 교회 여러 구역 수리 필요, 예배당 및 교실 카펫 물 손상으로 교체 필요
• 예상 비용: 4년 전 평가 기준 약 $500,000~$700,000, 현재는 기본적인 수리만 하려해도 30-50만불은 필요

 

가능한 해결 방안

첫째, 하프타임을 유지하면서, 교인들이 더 헌금을 해서 (4만불정도) 현재 상태로 유지하며 교회 부흥을 이루는 것입니다.

둘째, 인근교회의 건물공유나 교회연합가능성 타진하여 교회를 이전합니다. 이전할 시 교회 건물유지나 운영에 따른 비용을 반분하거나 절약할 수 있습니다. 교회 이전 시, 현 건물을 매각하여 그 자금을 유용할 수 있습니다. (2에이커 부지와 건물의 가치는 약 $2백만불-최대 $3백만불 평가)

 

논의 해야 할 중점 사항들:

1. 재정적 어려움을 감수하며 현 교회에 남아 있을 것인지 아니면 우리가 연합예배로 드린 두 교회 중 하나로 이사하여 건물을 빌려 쓰든지 합병할 의사가 있는지를 토의 합니다.

2. 두 교회 중 하나로 이전할 경우 건물을 빌려 쓸 것인지 합병을 시도할 것인지를 토의 합니다.

3. 또 교회를 이전할 경우, 두 교회 중 어느 교회로 이사할 것인지를 토의 합니다.

 

두 교회 중 한 교회로 이전할 경우의 장 단점

레딩에 있는 올드 싸우스 연합감리교회 (홍종욱 목사 담임)

1. 재정적 함의: 올드싸우스 교회는 현재 풀타임 교회로서45-60명정도 예배출석을 하고 있고 재정적으로는 안정되어 있어, 우리 교회가 참여를 해, 어느정도 재정적 기여를 해도 우리 교회에 크게 부담이 될 정도는 아님

2. 장소와 교통: 레딩에 위치해 있어 현재 우리 교회에서 20-25분정도 걸림. 또 5분거리내에 기차역이 있어 EM에게 유리하고 보스톤에 가까움. 하지만 연로하신 한인 회중에겐 거리의 부담이 있음.

3. 건물: 오래된 건물이지만 관리가 잘 되어 있음. 본당과 소 예배실, 그리고 수리를 해야 하지만 지하에 150명정도가 예배할 수 있는 부엌이 딸린 공간이 있음 (연회에서 EM에게 정비할 예산지원가능) 그리고 EM과 한인 회중이 동시간대에 예배할 수 있음

4. 주차장: 교회에 딸린 주차장이 작아 불편하지만 휴일에는 주변에 주차할 공간을 확보할 수 있음

5. 교인들의 성향: 미국 회중의 환대와 통합에 적극적임

 

노쓰 엔도버에 있는 제일 연합감리교회 (이신재 목사 담임)

1. 재정적 함의: 제일교회와 풀타임을 유지하기 위해 재정적으로 우리교회와 반반으로 재정을 부담해야 함. 현재 제일 교회는 몬테소리유치원과 이중문화교회가 건물과 목사관을 렌트하고, 교인들 헌금으로 하프타임을 유지하고 있음.

2. 장소와 교통: 노스 엔도버에 위치해 있어 현재 우리 교회에서 5-10분의 거리에 위치해 있고, EM에게는 5분-10분 더 운전해야 하고 보스톤에 더 멀어지지만, 연로하신 한인회중에겐 익숙하고 거리의 부담이 없음.

3. 건물: 잘 관리된 현대적인 예배당과 친교실, 그리고 작은 교실이 있음. 아래에 있는 교실들은 몬테소리라는 학교에 건물을 임대하여 교회가 사용할 수 없음. 하지만 1층에 20명 정도를 수용할 수 있는 교실 3개와 큰 성가대실과, 2층에 큰 교실, 도합 6개의 교실이 있고, 또 친교실이 (현 이중문화가 예배드림)있어 한어와 영어로 동시에 예배할 수 있는 공간이 있음. 하지만 지금 12시에 모이고 있는 이중문화 교회가 렌트를 하고 있어 이를 조정하는 것이 향후 과제임. 그리고 아이들이 놀수 있는 놀이터도 있음.

4. 주차장: 교회에 딸린 주차장이 넉넉해 주일에 주차할 공간을 충분함.

5. 교인들의 성향: 우리 교회와의 통합에는 미온적임.

“Rather, speaking the truth in love…” (Ephesians 4:15)

Dear beloved members of the church,

I pray that the peace of the Risen Christ may abound upon our church as we are united in the joy of the resurrection.

We now stand at an important crossroads, facing decisions that will shape the future of our church. Before making any decisions, we would like to gather as one body after this coming Sunday’s worship service for an open and honest conversation about the direction we should take. The matters for discussion are as follows:

1. Current State of the Church

a) Congregational status

b) Sharing facilities with a nearby church or pursuing a church partnership

Current Situations of the Church

It has been two years since we experienced the painful division related to the issue of human sexuality. Currently, about 30–40 people attend Sunday Korean worship regularly. The EM is actively thriving, with 30–50 attendees on Sundays. The Sunday School has about 10–15 children, and there are around 10 young adult families in their 30s to 50s. Altogether, total Sunday attendance is approximately 90–110 people.

 

To sustain a full-time pastoral appointment (including minimum salary, continuing education, health insurance, pension, and providing parsonage), along with staff for Sunday School, youth, and EM, as well as accompanist, building maintenance, building insurance, and conference mission shares, we would need approximately $250,000–$280,000 annually.

 

Currently, weekly offerings range from $2,500 to $3,500, with an annual budget of about $180,000. The English Ministry contributes approximately one-third of the total offering, and participation in leadership continues to grow. Even if we were to call a half-time pastor, we would still need approximately $200,000–$220,000, requiring an additional $20,000–$40,000 in giving.

 

In addition, any major building repairs would require special fundraising. Current building concerns include:

 

· Severe roof leakage (during winter snow/ice and summer heavy rains)

· Parking lot maintenance issues with potential legal risks due to neighborhood complaints

· Sanctuary window repairs needed (risk of glass falling during strong winds)

· Water damage to carpets in the sanctuary and classrooms requiring replacement

· Estimated repair costs: previously $500,000–$700,000 (four years ago); currently at least $300,000–$500,000 even for essential repairs

 

Possible Options

 

First, we may continue as a half-time pastoral appointment while increasing giving (approximately $40,000 more) to maintain our current structure and pursue renewal and growth.

 

Second, we may explore sharing facilities or forming a partnership with a nearby church and relocate. This could significantly reduce building maintenance and operational costs. If we relocate, the sale of our current property (approximately 2 acres, valued at $2–3 million) could provide meaningful financial resources.

Whether we are willing to remain in our current location despite financial challenges, or relocate to one of the two churches with whom we have held joint services

If relocating, whether we should rent space or pursue a merger

Consideration of Two Churches

 

Old South United Methodist Church in Reading (Rev. Jongwook Hong)

 

·Financially stable with 45–60 in attendance; our participation would not create a heavy burden (Fulltime church)

· About 20–25 minutes from our current location; close to a train station and Boston (advantage for EM), though farther for elderly members

·Well-maintained historic building; includes sanctuary, chapel, and a fellowship hall (with potential renovation support from the Conference)

·Limited parking, but additional parking is available nearby on Sundays

·Congregation is welcoming and open to integration

 

First United Methodist Church in North Andover (Pastor, Shin Jae Lee)

 

·Financial responsibility would need to be shared equally to maintain full-time ministry

· Located 5–10 minutes away; convenient for current members, though slightly farther for EM and Boston access

· Modern, well-maintained sanctuary; however, space limitations due to current tenants (Montessori school and another congregation)· There is a main sanctuary, a small chapel, and a basement space—with a kitchen—that can accommodate about 150 people for worship, though it requires some repairs (funding for renovations may be available to the EM through the conference). In addition, the EM and the Korean congregation are able to hold worship services at the same time.

 

·Worship schedules would be separated (Korean 9:AM, English 10:30 AM, and EM 12:00 PM), creating time gaps and challenges for shared ministry

·Ample parking available

· Congregation shows a more cautious attitude toward integration

 

Future Timeline

· Joint service with Old South UMC (March 29)

· Joint service with First UMC (April 5)

· Congregational Conversation I (April 12)

· Congregational Conversation II (April 19)

· Charge Conference with District Superintendent (April 26)

· Appointment of new senior pastor (after April 26 – before June 30)

· Retirement of Rev. Seok-Hwan Hong (June 30)

 

“New wine must be put into new wineskins, and so both are preserved.” (Matthew 9:17) God brings forth new creation out of chaos (Genesis 1:2). The risen Lord grants peace in the midst of uncertainty and fear (John 20:19).

 

As we approach the 50th Jubilee of our church, we are prayerfully seeking a new vision for both the first and second generations.

 

Immediately following this coming Sunday’s worship, we will hold a congregational meeting to discuss the future of our church. I invite you to share openly and thoughtfully as we seek the best path forward together.
