부활절 목회서신: “제 삼일에 “

사랑하는 성도 여러분, 죽음에서 부활하시어 죄와 사망을 이기시고 우리에게 승리를 주신 우리 주 예수 그리스도의 이름으로 부활의 기쁜 인사를 전합니다.

예수님께서는 금요일에 돌아가셨고 해가 지기 전 무덤에 묻히셨습니다. 그것이 ‘첫째 날’ 이었습니다. 토요일은 침묵과 슬픔, 혼란과 기다림의 시간인 ‘둘째 날’이었습니다. 그리고 마침내 주일 이른 아침, 부활과 새 생명의 날인 ‘셋째 날’이 밝았습니다.

우리의 삶도 때로는 이 ‘둘째 날’에 머물러 있을 때가 참 많습니다. 약속과 성취 사이, 기도와 응답 사이, 그리고 절망과 희망 사이에서 우린 살아갑니다. 제자들도 그 둘째 날을 견뎌야 했습니다. 그들은 모든 것이 끝났다고 생각했습니다. 하지만 셋째 날, 부활하신 주님은 막달라 마리아와 엠마오로 가던 두 제자, 베드로와 도마, 그리고 소망을 잃은 모든 이들에게 나타나셨습니다.

꼭 기억합시다. 누구에게나 셋째 날은 반드시 옵니다. 새 생명이 오고야 맙니다. 우리에게 소망은 반드시 찾아옵니다. 왜냐하면 우린 부활의 주님을 믿고 사니까요.

제가 중학생 때,청소년부 부장 선생님께서 『꽃들에게 희망을』이라는 작은 책을 선물해 주셨습니다. 삶의 의미를 찾아 헤매던 두 애벌레, ‘줄무늬’와 ‘노랑이’의 이야기입니다. 어느 날 그들은 나뭇가지에 거꾸로 매달려 고치(집)를 짓고 있는 한 애벌레를 보았습니다. 두려웠지만 그들도 용기를 내어 스스로 고치가 되기로 결심했습니다. 시간이 흐른 뒤, 노랑이는 아름다운 나비가 되어 세상 밖으로 나왔습니다.

이 단순한 이야기는 우리에게 깊은 진리를 가르쳐 줍니다. 가끔 우리 삶은 거꾸로 매달린 채 어두운 고치 속에 갇힌 것처럼 느껴질 때가 있습니다. 십자가를 지고, 마냥 기다리고, 애쓰면서도 앞으로 어떻게 될지를 몰라 막막할 때 말입니다. 하지만 그 고치 안에서는 무언가 변하고 있습니다. 끝처럼 보이는 그 순간이 사실은 나비로 변화하는 새로운 시작이었던 것입니다. 부활은 이미 우리 안에서 일어나고 있습니다.

부활절은 하나님께서 언제나 새 생명을 주시고, 세상을 새롭게 변화시키신다는 것을 가르쳐 줍니다. 꼭 기억합시다. 우리가 지금 둘째 날을 살고 있을지라도, 셋째 날은 반드시 옵니다.

그리스도께서 살아나셨습니다! 참으로 살아나셨습니다! 알렐루야! 기쁜 부활절 되시기를 바랍니다.

Easter Pastoral Letter: On the Third Day

“Christ died, he was buried, and he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures.” (1 Corinthians 15:4)

Dear Beloved in Christ,

I send you Easter greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has risen from the dead and gives us victory over sin and death.

Jesus died on Friday and was buried before sunset. That was the First Day. Saturday was the Second Day—a day of silence, grief, confusion, and waiting. Then early Sunday morning came the Third Day—the day of resurrection and new life.

In our lives, we often live on the “Second Day.” We live between promise and fulfillment, between prayer and answer, between despair and hope. The disciples also lived through that second day; they thought everything was over. But on the Third Day, the risen Lord appeared to Mary Magdalene, to the two disciples on the road to Emmaus, to Peter, to Thomas, and to all who had lost hope. Remember this: the Third Day will come. New life will come. Hope will come.

When I was in middle school, my Sunday School teacher gave me a small book called Hope for the Flowers. It is the story of two caterpillars, Stripe and Yellow, who were searching for the meaning of life. One day they saw a caterpillar hanging upside down from a branch, spinning a cocoon. They were afraid, but they decided to take the risk and make cocoons themselves. After some time, Yellow came out as a beautiful butterfly.

This simple children’s story teaches us a deep truth. Sometimes our lives feel like we are hanging upside down, making a dark cocoon—carrying the cross, waiting, struggling, and not knowing what will happen next. But inside the cocoon, something is changing. What looks like an ending is actually a beginning. Resurrection is already happening within us.

Easter teaches us that God always grants new life and transforms the world anew. Let us keep this in mind: even if we are living through the ‘Second Day’ right now, the ‘Third Day’ will surely come.

Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! Alleluia!
