사순절 31: 보스턴 대학교의 최초 흑인 채플 학장, 하워드 서먼

하워드 서먼(Howard Thurman)은 20세기 미국 영성의 거인이자, 비폭력 민권운동의 사상적 토대를 놓은 인물이다. 20세기 민권운동의 영적 스승이자, 마틴 루터 킹 주니어의 멘토이기도 했다. 서먼은 1899년 플로리다주의 인종 격리된 흑인 마을에서 태어났다. 어린 시절 아버지를 여의고 노예 출신이었던 할머니 밑에서 자란 배경은 그의 신학에 깊은 뿌리가 되었다. 모어하우스 컬리지와 로체스터 신학교를 졸업했으며, 퀘이커 신비주의자인 루퍼스 존스(Rufus Jones)로부터 깊은 영향을 받아 ‘내면의 빛’과 영적 신비주의에 눈을 떴다.

1935년, 인도 방문 중 마하트마 간디를 만난 것은 그의 인생에서 결정적인 사건이었다. 그는 간디로부터 “비폭력(Ahimsa)은 약자의 무기가 아니라, 가장 용기 있는 자의 힘”이라는 교훈을 얻었고, 이를 미국 흑인들의 상황에 접목했다.

마틴 루터 킹 주니어가 킹이 보스턴 대학교에서 박사 과정을 밟을 때, 서먼은 그곳의 채플 학장이었다. 킹 목사는 서먼의 설교를 들으며 비폭력 저항의 신학적 정당성을 확립했다.

킹 목사는 집회나 행진 때 항상 서먼의 저서인 예수와 소외된 자들(Jesus and the Disinherited 을 주머니에 넣고 다녔다. 예수의 가르침이 어떻게 사회적 약자들에게 심리적 해방과 저항의 용기를 주는지를 다루고 있어, 킹의 비폭력 철학에 교과서가 되었다. 1958년 킹 목사가 피습을 당해 병원에 입원했을 때, 서먼은 그를 방문해 “휴식과 명상을 통해 내면의 영을 회복하라”고 조언하며 활동가로서의 번아웃을 경계하도록 도왔다.

1953년, 서먼은 보스턴 대학교의 최초 흑인 채플 학장(Dean of Marsh Chapel)으로 부임했다. 이는 당시 백인 주류 대학 사회에서 기념비적인 사건이었다. 서먼의 세련된 지성과 깊은 신비주의적 통찰을 결합하여, 전국으로 방송된 설교로 수많은 사람에게 영적 위로를 주었다.

서먼박사의 가장 위대한 통찰은 ‘예수는 누구를 위해 오셨는가?’라는 질문에서 시작된다. 서먼은 예수가 로마라는 거대 제국의 압제 아래, 사회적·정치적 권력이 전혀 없던 ‘등이 벽에 밀착된(with their backs against the wall)’ 소외된 자 중 한 명이었다고 말한다. 예수는 단순히 하늘의 구름 위를 걷는 거룩하신 분이 아니라, 억압받는 자들의 두려움과 분노, 그리고 그들이 직면한 생존의 위협을 몸소 겪으신 분이었다.

사회운동을 하며 사회복음을 전하던 사람들이 가장 빠지기 쉬운 함정은 ‘영적인 소진’과 ‘냉소’다. 세상의 악이 너무나 분명하여 어디서부터 시작해야 할지 모를 때, 우리의 결심은 옅어 지고, 곧 실망하기 쉽다. 서먼은 . 시끄러운 세상의 소음을 멈추고 내면의 하나님의 목소리를 듣는 훈련을 강조했는데, 이는 격렬한 사회운동 속에 있던 이들에게 꼭 필요한 영적 샘물이었다. 이 침묵기도속에 떠오르는 내면의 평화는 현실 도피가 아니라, 오히려 세상을 향해 다시 나갈 수 있게 하는 ‘거룩한 충격’이며 ‘하나님의 은혜의 해, 희년”인 것이다. 하워드 서먼이 가르쳐준 사회정의는 단순히 누군가를 비난하는 것에 그치지 않고, 억압 받는 자가 스스로의 존엄을 깨닫고 사랑의 힘으로 장벽을 넘어서도록 권고 하였다.

하나님, 저는 늘 불안합니다. 내 계획대로 빨리 이루어지지 않으면 견디지 못하고 서두릅니다. 무언가 자라나는 데는 시간이 걸리고, 모든 일에는 과정이 필요하다는 그 당연한 진리를 저는 자꾸 잊어버립니다.

주님, 제게 주님의 시간 감각을 주소서. 무엇이 정말 급한 일인지, 무엇이 기다려야 할 일인지 구별하게 하소서. 서두르느라 놓쳤던 삶의 깊이를 다시 보게 하시고, 영원하신 주님의 관점으로 오늘을 바라보게 하소서.

하나님, 삶의 자잘한 소음과 복잡한 일들이 저를 짓누릅니다. 정작 해야 할 소중한 일들은 뒤로 밀려나고, 별것 아닌 사소한 일들에 마음과 시간을 다 빼앗기며 그것을 핑계 삼아 살아갑니다.

주님, 제게 주님의 질서 감각을 주소서. 뒤엉킨 제 삶의 우선순위를 정돈해 주소서. 헛된 것에 에너지를 쏟지 않고, 하나님이 원하시는 ‘참된 가치’를 제 삶의 중심에 두는 질서 있는 영성을 허락하소서.

하나님, 과거의 상처에 묶여 있거나 현재의 높은 벽에 가로막혀 주저앉지 않게 하소서.

삶은 정체되어 있는 것이 아니라, 언제나 주님이 예비하신 미래를 향해 흐르고 있음을 믿습니다.

주님, 제게 주님의 미래 감각을 주소서. 내일의 소망을 오늘 살아있게 하소서. 낙심하여 영혼이 병들지 않도록, 보이지 않는 곳에서 새 일을 행하시는 주님의 비전을 제 눈에 담아 주소서.

The first Black Dean of Marsh Chapel at Boston University, Howard Thurman (1899–1981)

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me… to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” (Luke 4:18–19)

Howard Thurman was one of the great spiritual leaders in America in the 20th century. He helped build the spiritual foundation for the nonviolent civil rights movement. He was also a mentor and spiritual teacher to Martin Luther King Jr..

Thurman was born in 1899 in a segregated Black community in Florida. His father died when he was young, and he was raised by his grandmother, who had been a slave. This background deeply shaped his faith and his understanding of God and justice.

He studied at Morehouse College and Rochester Theological Seminary. He was strongly influenced by a Quaker mystic named Rufus Jones, who taught about the “inner light” and spiritual contemplation.

In 1935, Thurman visited India and met Mahatma Gandhi. This meeting changed his life. From Gandhi he learned that nonviolence is not the weapon of the weak, but the strength of the courageous. Thurman later applied this idea to the struggle of African Americans in the United States.

When Martin Luther King Jr. was studying for his doctorate at Boston University, Thurman was the Dean of Marsh Chapel there. King often listened to Thurman’s sermons and developed the theological foundation for nonviolent resistance through Thurman’s influence.

King often carried Thurman’s book, Jesus and the Disinherited in his pocket during marches and meetings. The book explains how the teachings of Jesus give courage, dignity, and psychological freedom to oppressed people. This book became like a textbook for King’s philosophy of nonviolence.

In 1958, when King was stabbed and hospitalized, Thurman visited him and advised him to restore his inner spirit through rest and meditation, warning him about burnout as an activist.

In 1953, Thurman became the first Black Dean of Marsh Chapel at Boston University. This was a historic event at a time when most major universities were dominated by white leadership. His sermons were broadcast across the country and brought spiritual comfort to many people.

Thurman often asked this question: “Who did Jesus come for?” He said Jesus was one of the people whose “backs were against the wall” — people with no political power, living under the Roman Empire. Jesus was not distant from suffering people. He understood fear, anger, and the daily struggle for survival that oppressed people experienced. Thurman warned that people working for social justice often fall into two dangers: Spiritual exhaustion and Cynicism

When the evil of the world seems too big, people lose focus and become discouraged. Thurman taught that we must stop the noise of the world and learn to listen to God’s voice in silence. This inner silence and prayer are not escaping from the world. Instead, they give us new strength to go back into the world again.

For Thurman, social justice was not just about blaming others. It was about helping oppressed people discover their own dignity and cross barriers through the power of love.

I NEED YOU, LORD!

I need Your sense of time. Always I have an underlying anxiety about things. Sometimes I am in a hurry to achieve my ends and am completely without patience. It is hard for me to realize that some growth is slow, that not all processes are swift. I cannot discriminate between what takes time to develop and what can be rushed because my sense of time is dulled. O to understand the meaning of perspective that I may do all things with a profound sense of leisure of time.

I need Your sense of order. The confusion of the details of living is sometimes overwhelming. The little things keep getting in my way, providing ready-made excuses for failure to do and be what I know I ought to do and be. Much time is spent on things that are not very important while significant things are put in an insignificant place in my scheme of order. I must unscramble my affairs so that my life will become order. O God, I need Your sense of order.

I need Your sense of the future. Teach me to know that life is ever on the side of the future. Keep alive in me the future look, the high hope. Let me not be frozen either by the past or the present. Grant me, O Patient One, Your sense of the future without which all life would sicken and die.
