해리엇 비처 스토우 Harriet Beecher Stowe (1811–1896)

Harriet Beecher Stowe는 노예제 폐지 운동가였고, 유명한 책 “엉클 톰스 캐빈” (Uncle Tom’s Cabin)의 작가입니다. 그녀의 삶과 글은 “펜은 칼보다 강하다”라는 말을 보여 줍니다.

대통령 아브라함 링컨 Abraham Lincoln은 그녀에게 이렇게 말했습니다. “이렇게 큰 노예 해방을 위한 남북 전쟁을 일어나게 한 책을 쓴 작은 여인이 바로 당신이군요!” 물론 그녀가 남북전쟁을 시작한 것은 아니지만, 그녀의 글은 노예 해방이 이루어지도록 큰 영향을 주었던 것은 사실입니다.

그녀의 18개월 된 아들이 죽었을 때, 그녀는 큰 슬픔을 겪었습니다. 이 경험 때문에, 노예로 살던 어머니들이 자식이 팔려 갈 때 느꼈던 마음과 그 아픔을 더 깊이 이해하게 되었습니다. 이 슬픔과 도망 노예법(Fugitive Slave Law) 때문에 그녀는 당시 흑인들의 고통에 대해 글을 쓰게 되었습니다.

주님, 당신의 그 신비한 말씀은 너무 순수하고, 너무 높고, 너무 깊어서 제가 다 이해할 수 없습니다. 애쓰다 지치고, 간절한 마음으로 이 말을 기도로 다시 주님께 드립니다.

주님, 내 안에 머무소서. 주의 사랑으로 내 마음의 모든 생각과 어두운 죄를 덮어 주소서. 이기적인 마음이 생기기 전에 꺼 주시고 내 영혼을 주님의 것처럼 고요하고 거룩하게 지켜 주소서.

흙으로 만든 작은 병에 귀한 향수가 담기면 그 병 전체에서 향기가 나는 것처럼 주님이 제 영혼 안에 계시면 하늘의 향기가 저에게서 흘러나옵니다.

주님, 내 안에 머무소서. 제가 주님의 음성을 듣고 주님의 능력을 느꼈던 복된 순간들이 있었습니다. 그때는 악이 힘을 잃고 마음의 욕심도 잠잠해졌습니다.

주님, 내 안에 거하시고 저도 주님 안에 거하게 하소서. 이 시간부터 저를 떠나지 마소서. 그러면 마음의 갈등이 멈추고 상처가 치유되고 평생 흘리던 영혼의 피가 멈출 것입니다.

교회와 학교의 문을 그들에게 닫아야 합니까? 그들을 쫓아내야 합니까? 그리스도의 교회가 도움을 구하는 그들의 손을 외면해야 합니까?

만약 그렇게 한다면 그것은 매우 슬픈 일이 될 것입니다. 모든 나라들은 기억해야 합니다. 한 나라의 운명은 자비롭고 사랑이 많으신 하나님의 손에 있기 때문입니다.

Harriet Beecher Stowe (1811–1896)

Harriet Stowe was an abolitionist and author of the classic Uncle Tom’s Cabin. Her life embodied in her writing the saying, “The pen is mightier than the sword.” (Edward Bulwer-Lytoon) President Abraham Lincoln said to her: “So you’re the little woman who wrote the book that made this great war!” Actually, she was not the person who started the Civil War, her writing greatly influenced the way for inevitable emancipation. When her 18-month-old son died, this tragedy helped her understand the heartbreak enslaved mothers went through when their children were sold. Her loss and the Fugitive Slave Law led her to write about the plight of black people at the time. The book brought the issue of slavery into attention like never before. “Stowe had baptized with holy fire myriads who before cared nothing for the bleeding slave.” (Frederick Douglas) The book was translated into more than 23 languages and sold out a million copies by the time of the Civil War. Abide in Me, and I in You: the Soul’s Answer

That mystic word of Thine, Sovereign Lord!

Is all too pure, too high, too deep for me;

Weary of striving, and with longing faint,

I breathe it back again in prayer to Thee.

Abide with me — o’ershadow with thy love

Each half-formed purpose and dark thought of sin;

Quench e’re it rise each selfish, low desire,

And keep my soul as Thine — calm and divine.

As some rare perfume in a vase of clay

Pervades it with a fragrance not its own —

So, when thou dwellest in a mortal soul.

All heaven’s own sweetness seems around it thrown.
