사순절 29: 미스터 로저스 아저씨와 고난주간

아이들 키우시는 분들은 모두 미스터 로저스의 이웃들이라는 텔레비전 프로그램을 알고 계십니다. 로저스 아저씨는 시작할 때 언제나 미소와 노래로 현관문을 들어 섭니다. 그가 방에 들어오면, 입었던 재킷을 벗어 옷장에 걸어 둡니다. 여전히 미소 지으며 노래를 부르다가, 앉아서 구두를 벗고, 편안한 운동화로 갈아 신습니다. 이것이 그가 매일 하는 일상의 루틴입니다.

왜 그 스웨터와 운동화일까? 스웨터는 로저스 아저씨의 어머니가 매년 크리스마스마다 손으로 떠 주신 것입니다. 이런 일상을 통해 그는 텔레비전 화면 건너편에 있는 아이들이 편안하게 마음을 열고 함께 시간을 나누도록 도와주었습니다. 그의 모든 움직임, 소리, 이야기, 스웨터와 운동화는 아이들이 안전하고 편안함을 느끼도록 신중하게 선택된 것이었습니다.

어떤 부부는 한 사람이 집에 돌아오면 “여보, 나 왔어!”라고 말하면, 다른 한 사람은 열정적으로 달려와 “와, 잘 왔어!”라고 외치며 안아주는 전통이 있습니다. 한 미용사는 하루 일을 마치면 발이 아플 때가 많은데, 남편은 매일 15분 동안 따뜻한 물로 그녀의 발을 마사지해 줍니다. 그들에게는 매일매일이 사랑을 기념하는 날이 됩니다. 단순히 일상을 반복하며 살아가는 것이 아니라, 삶 속에 이런 의식을 만들어 삶을 더 생생하고 풍성하게 만듭니다.

여러분에게도 자신만의 의식이 있을 것입니다. 우리는 아무 생각 없이 매일 이를 닦는 습관으로 더 아름다운 미소를 가지게 되고, 충치와 잇몸병도 줄어들며, 병원비를 줄입니다. 이 단순한 일상의 의식이 우리를 지속적으로 변화시키고 있는 것입니다.

오늘부터 고난 주간이 시작됩니다. 어떤 이는 금식을 하고, 어떤이는 핸드폰을 멀리하고, 어떤 이는 고난주간 예배에 참석합니다. 우리는 성 목요일에 주님의 마지막 만찬을 나눌 것입니다. 성금요일을 Maundy Thursday라고 부릅니다. 이 말은 라틴어 mandatum에서 온 것으로 “새 계명”, 곧 사랑의 계명을 의미합니다. 이 날은 전통적으로 서로 발을 씻겨 주고, 병자를 위해 이마에게 기름을 바르고, 성찬을 나누며 예수님과 마지막 식사를 함께 나눕니다. 십자가의 고통이 오기 전에 친구들이 함께 기뻐하는 순간입니다. 사랑의 끈으로 예수님과 우리가 하나되는 시간입니다. 깨어 기도하는 시간입니다.\.

미스터 로저스의 일상에서 보았듯이, 의식과 반복되는 행동은 우리의 영적이고 정서적인 관계를 깊어지도록 우리를 도와줍니다. 그것은 우리의 삶에 더 밝은 빛과 기쁨을 가져다 줍니다. 의식은 우리의 영성생활을 변화시기고 깊어지게 하는 중요한 부분입니다. 이번 고난주간은 여러분의 영적 건강을 위해, 예수님의 고난의 길에 동참하고, 예수님이 주시는 식탁을 경험하시길 바랍니다. 목요일 교회에서 저녁 7시에 떼제찬양 부르며 주님을 만나보시길 바랍니다.

Mr. Rogers and Passion Week

“Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” (1 Corinthians 11: 25)

Mister Rogers steps through his front door with a smile and a song, shrugs off his work jacket and puts it on its hanger in a closet. Still smiling and still singing, he sits down to swap out his loafers for well-loved but not worn-out sneakers. That is the routine Mr. Rogers does every day. Why those sweaters and sneakers? Sweater was the one his mother gave him each a hand-knit sweater every Christmas. Through these rituals and routines, he is offering to children to relax and share a moment together on the other end of a TV screen. Each movement, sound, story, sweater and canvas sneaker was chosen to make children feel safe and comfortable.

A couple have a tradition that whenever one of them comes home, they call out “honey I’m home” and the other enthusiastically yells back, “Hooray!” One has been saying grace before dinner for years. A hairdresser often experiences aching feet at the end of her workday. Her husband massages her feet for a full fifteen minutes every day. For them each and every day can become a celebration of love. Rather than simply going through the motions of life, integrating rituals into our lives brings vivid color. Perhaps you would have your own rituals. We do brush our teeth every day without even thinking about it. As a result, we have a prettier smile, less tooth decay and gum disease, and far fewer dental bills. This simple daily ritual is perpetually transformative.

This is a passion week. We will celebrate a meal on Thursday which is called “Maundy,” coming from the Latin word mandatum, “the new commandment” of love. It is the special day of friendship, and the traditional ceremonies of the day – the washing of feet, the blessing of oils for the sick, eating together last meal with Jesus. It is the moment of friends rejoicing together before the pain of tomorrow. We must watch and pray that the bond of love may hold us firm as Jesus’ friends, and friends of one another.

Rituals as we seen in the routine Mr. Rogers did, are actions that support the deepening of our spiritual and emotional connections. They bring extra brightness and fulfillment into our lives. Rituals are ceremonies involving life changing and forming as integral parts of all our spiritual life. Make this holy week your important ritual for your spiritual well-being. Come and see Jesus as your Lord!
