사순절 28: 토마스 베리 신부

토마스 베리 신부는 성경 이전에 자연 그 자체가 하나님을 드러내는 첫 번째 책이라고 하였다. 또 베리 신부는 인간만이 영혼을 가진 것이 아니라, 모든 피조물이 저마다의 내면성과 가치를 지닌 성스러운 주체라고 보았다. 바울도 또 로마서 1장20절에 “세상이 창조된 때부터 하나님의 보이지 않는 본성, 곧 그분의 영원한 힘과 신성은 위업들을 통해 깨달아 알 수 있게 되었다.”고 했다. 오늘은 스스로를 ‘지구 학자(Geologian)’라 불렀던 토마스 베리 신부의 지혜를 통해, 우리 시대가 마주한 가장 거대한 도전인 환경 위기에 대해 묵상하려 한다.

우리는 매일같이 기후 위기와 생태계 파괴의 소식을 듣는다. 베리 신부는 이 위기가 단순히 정치적, 경제적, 기술적인 문제가 아니라, 본질적으로 ‘영적인 위기’라 했다. 그동안 우리는 숲을 목재로 보고, 강을 공업용수로 보며, 동물을 식량으로만 대하는 ‘물건의 세계’에 살고 있었다. 하지만 베리 신부는 우리가 숲을 파괴할 때, 우리는 단지 자원을 없애는 것이 아니라 하나님께서 창조하신 거룩한 형제자매들을 살해한다고 하였다.

이 지구위에 우리만 살다가는 것이 아니다. 우리들의 자녀들이 살아갈 땅이기도 하다. 따라서”이것이 인간에게 이로운가?”가 아니라 “이것이 아이들이 살아갈 세상을 위해서도 이로운가?”를 생각해야 한다.

토마스 베리 신부는 지구가 스스로를 치유하고 회복하려는 ‘꿈’을 꾸고 있다고 믿었다. 이제 환경 보호는 선택 사항이 아니라, 그리스도인으로서 우리가 지켜야 할 가장 숭고한 영적 책무이라는 것이다.

우리가 다시 꽃 한 송이에서 창조주의 숨결을 느끼고, 흐르는 강물에서 생명의 노래를 들을 때, 비로소 우리들과 자연의 치유는 시작된다고 보았다. 지구라는 성스러운 공동체, 하나님이 잘 돌보며 살라고 주신 세상, 앞으로 우리들의 후손들이 살아갈 땅을 오염시켜서는 안되겠다.

토마스 베리의 지혜로운 묵상

“그 이름을 찬양하라. 하나님이 명령하시니 그것들이 창조되었도다. 땅에서 하나님을 찬양하라. 큰 바다 생물들과 깊은 바다여, 번개와 우박, 눈과 구름, 하나님의 뜻을 이루는 거센 바람아, 산들과 모든 언덕들아, 열매 맺는 나무와 모든 백향목들아, 들짐승과 가축들아, 기어 다니는 것들과 나는 새들아.” (시편 148편)

하늘을 바라보십시오—

푸르게 펼쳐진 하늘, 찬란히 빛나는 태양,

장난치듯 떠다니는 구름, 높이 나는 맹금류,

꽃피는 들판과 숲속의 생명들,

바다를 향해 노래하며 흐르는 강들,

땅 위의 늑대의 노래, 바다 속 고래의 노래,

곳곳에서 울려 퍼지는 축제, 자유롭고 넘치는 기쁨,

계절풍처럼 거대한 기쁨이 바다를 들어 올려

애팔래치아의 풍경 위로 쏟아지며,

기쁨의 홍수로 우리 모두를 적십니다.

우리가 두 팔을 벌리고 서로에게 달려갈 때,

너와 나, 우리 모두는 모든 것을 하나로 묶는

그 크고 자비로운 현존에 이끌립니다.

그 친밀한 축제 속에서—

그 축제 자체가 곧 우주입니다.

“우리는 사물의 더 깊은 실재와의 연결을 잃어버렸습니다. 그 결과 우리는 이제 아무것도 거룩하지 않고, 아무것도 신성하지 않은 황폐한 대륙 위에 서 있습니다. 더 이상 본래적 가치가 있는 세계도, 경이로움의 세계도, 손대지 않은 순수한 세계도 없습니다. 우리는 모든 것을 사용해 버렸습니다. ‘개발’이라는 이름으로 우리는 지구를 새로운 형태의 황무지로 만들어 왔습니다.

이제 우리 앞에 놓인 단 하나의 문제는 ‘생존’입니다. 단순한 육체적 생존이 아니라, 충만한 삶이 있는 세계에서의 생존, 살아 있는 세계에서의 생존입니다. 봄이면 제비꽃이 피고, 별들이 신비롭게 빛나는 그런 의미 있는 세계에서의 생존입니다.”

“우리는 오직 우리 자신에게만 말하고 있습니다. 우리는 강과 대화하지 않고, 바람과 별의 소리를 듣지 않습니다. 우리는 위대한 대화를 끊어버렸습니다. 그 대화를 끊음으로써 우리는 우주를 산산이 깨뜨렸습니다. 지금 일어나는 모든 재난은 그러한 영적 단절의 결과입니다.”

“정원을 가꾸는 일은 우주의 가장 깊은 신비에 능동적으로 참여하는 것입니다.”

창세기 2,15: “주 하느님께서는 사람을 데려다 에덴 동산에 두시어, 그곳을 일구고 돌보게 하셨다.”

Father Thomas Berry (1914– 2009)

Thomas Berry, Passionist priest and eco-theologian, argues that our culture needs a “new story” to guide it into a less destructive ecological age. Such a story integrates the scientific story of the emergence of the universe with the experience of a sacred presence within the cosmos. Raised in the hills of North Carolina in a family of 15, Thomas Berry entered a monastery at the age of 20 and later went on to a prodigious career as a spiritual leader, academic, and historian of the earth.

An ordained Catholic priest who attests that the environmental crisis is fundamentally a spiritual crisis, the 93-year-old Berry is widely regarded as the most important eco-theologian of our time — or, as he describes himself, an “Earth scholar” or “geologian.” His major contributions to the discussions on the environment are in his books The Dream of the Earth (1988), The Great Work: Our Way into the Future (1992), and Evening Thoughts: Reflecting on Earth as Sacred Community (2006).

REFLECTION WITH WISDOM OF THOMAS BERRY

Let them praise the name of the God, for God commanded and they were created.

Praise the God from the earth, you great sea creatures and all ocean depths, lightning and hail, snow and clouds, stormy winds that do God’s bidding, you mountains and all hills, fruit trees and all cedars, wild animals and all cattle, small creatures and flying birds.

Look up at the sky-

The heavens so blue, the sun so radiant,

The clouds so playful, the soaring raptors,

The meadows in bloom, the woodland creatures,

The rivers singing their way to the sea,

Wolf song on the land, whale song in the sea,

Celebration everywhere, wild, riotous,

Immense as a monsoon lifting an ocean of joy

And spilling it down over the Appalachian Landscape,

Drenching us all with a deluge of delight

As we open our arms and rush toward each other,

You and I and all of us,

“We have lost our connection to this deeper reality of things. Consequently, we now find ourselves on a devastated continent where nothing is holy, nothing is sacred. We no longer have a world of inherent value, no world of wonder, no untouched, unspoiled, unused world. We have used everything. By “developing” the planet, we have been reducing earth to a new type of barrenness…There is now a single issue before us: survival.
