존 뉴톤: 노예무역업자 (1725–1807)
디트리히 본회퍼는 독일의 루터교 목사이자 신학자, 그리고 작가였다. 그는 히틀러와 나치 정권에 맞서 싸운 사람으로 잘 알려져 있다.
사람들은 모두 “나같은 죄인 살리신”(Amazing Grace)이라는 찬송가는 알고 있지만, 그 찬송을 만든 사람이 누구인지는 모를 수도 있다. 존 뉴턴은 한때 노예선을 운항하던 선장이었고, 몇 년 동안 노예 무역에 종사했다. 어느 날 고향으로 돌아오던 항해 중, 배는 아일랜드 해안 근처에서 무서운 폭풍을 만나 거의 침몰할 뻔했다. 그때 뉴턴은 하나님께 기도했다. 처음에는 깊이 생각하지도 않은 채 이렇게 외쳤습니다. “자비를 베푸소서, 하나님! 나에게 자비를 베푸소서!” 그것은 그가 여러 해 동안 잊고 지냈던 하나님의 자비를 처음으로 생각하게 된 순간이었다.
마침내 그는 하나님을 등지고 살아 왔던 삶을 돌아보며 회개하기 시작했다. “나는 그 때 기도할 수 밖에 없었지만, 감히 하나님께 가까이 나아가 그분을 아버지라 부를 수도 없었다. 나의 기도는 까마귀의 울부짖음과 같았지만, 주님은 그런 소리도 멸시하지 않고 들으셨다. 나는 그동안 그렇게 자주 조롱했던 예수님을 생각하기 시작했다. 나는 그분의 삶과 죽음을 떠올렸다. 예수님의 죽음은 나의 죄 때문이기도 하지만, 고난 속에서 그분을 의지하는 사람들을 위한 죽음이었다. 그리고 나는 무엇보다도 하나님의 자비를 기도했다.”(존 뉴턴 회고록)
그는 회심이후 결국 노예 무역을 버렸고, 노예 제도 폐지를 지지하는 중요한 인물이 되었다. 그리고 그는 1807년 영국이 아프리카 노예 무역을 폐지하는 것을 그의 생전에 볼 수 있었다. 그 이후 그는 복음주의 신앙을 가진 목사가 되었고, 영국 국교회 사제로 안수 받아 약 20년 동안 교구 목사로 섬겼다.
그가 자신의 삶으로 고백하며 지은 찬송가 “어메이징 그레이스”는 지난 200년 동안 가장 사랑받는 찬송 중 하나가 되었다. 이 찬송은 해리엇 비처 스토의 노예제 반대 소설 「톰 아저씨의 오두막」에서도 언급되었고, 사람들이 어려운 시기를 겪을 때마다 이 찬송을 부른다.

“오, 지극히 은혜로우신 주님, 제가 주님 앞에서 무슨 말을 할 수 있겠습니까? 주님의 모든 선하심에 대해 내가 드릴 수 있는 것은 제가 행한 모든 죄를 고백 뿐입니다. 주님께서 감사할 줄 모르는 자, 세상에 존재는 모든 악한 자에게도 친절을 베푸시는 분이라 했는데, 그 대표적인 사람이 바로 저 입니다. 허망하게 낭비해 버린 지난 날의 삶을 용서해 주시고, 주님의 은혜를 오랫동안 헛되이 사용한 죄를 묻지 말아 주십시오. 나는 주님께 만 달란트를 빚졌으나 갚을 것이 아무것도 없습니다. 그러나 주님, 제게 오래 참아 주시기를 간구합니다. 내가 무엇을 해도 내 죄를 갚을 수 없기 때문이 아니라, 나의 구주 예수 그리스도, 당신의 사랑하는 아들이 나의 모든 죄를 속하시기에 충분한 일을 하셨고 충분히 고난을 받으셨기 때문입니다. 이제 나는 주님의 십가가의 공로를 의지하여 간절히 구하옵니다….” 아멘.
존 뉴턴의 지혜와 묵상
“젊었을 때 나는 많은 것을 확신했지만, 이제 내가 확실히 아는 것은 두 가지 뿐이다. 하나는 내가 비참한 죄인이라는 사실과, 다른 하나는 그리스도는 내 구세주라는 것이다.

John Newton:

Everybody knows the song “Amazing Grace” but may not know the author of the song. John Newton was a captain of slave ships, an investor of slave trade for several years. During the voyage home, the ship was caught in a horrendous storm off the coast of Ireland and almost sank. Newton prayed to God. The words were said without much thought at first, “Mercy, Mercy on me, God!” It was the first time he’d thought of God’s mercy for many years. Finally, he turned his back on God’s word, and began to pray: “I could not utter the prayer of faith; I could not draw near to a reconciled God, and call him Father; my prayer was like the cry of the ravens, which yet the Lord does not disdain to hear. I now began to think of that Jesus whom I had so often derided; I recollected the particulars of his life, and of his death; a death for sins not his own – but, as I remembered, for the sake of those who, in their distress, would put their trust in him. And how I chiefly wanted evidence.” (Memoirs of John Newton)
After experiencing a period of Christian conversion, Newton eventually renounced his trade and became a prominent supporter of abolitionism, living to see Britain’s abolition of the African slave trade in 1807. And later an evangelical, he was ordained as a Church of England priest and served as parish priest for two decades. The hymn, “Amazing Grace” is one of the most beloved hymns of the last two centuries. It was respected in Harriet Beecher Stowe’s anti-slavery novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin and had a surge of popularity during experiencing hard times.

“Alas! Most gracious Lord, what shall I say? I have nothing to offer for all thy goodness but new confessions of my guilt. That thou art kind to the unthankful and the evil, I am one of the most remarkable instances. Forgive me, I beseech thee, this year of misspent life, and charge me not with the long abuse of thy bounty. I owe thee ten thousand talents and have nothing to pay. Yet I entreat thee to have patience with me – not that it will be ever in my power to make any amends by the best I can do, but because my Savior Jesus Christ, thy beloved Son, has done and suffered more than sufficient to atone for all my offenses, and to supply all my defects. Let me plead his merits on behalf of myself….” Amen!
