수산나 웨슬리 Susanna Wesley (1669–1742)

수산나 웨슬리 (1669–1742)

수산나는 19명의 자녀를 낳았지만, 그중 10명만 살아남았습니다. 남편 사무엘 웨슬리는 재정 관리의 어려움으로 감옥에 갔고, 가족은 자주 경제적 어려움을 겪었습니다. 수산나는 모든 집안일을 손수 해야 했고, 아이들을 가르치며, 우유와 고기, 달걀을 얻기 위한 작은 농장까지 돌봐야 했습니다.
그렇게 바쁘고 힘든 가운데서도 놀라운 일이 있었습니다. 아이들이 말을 하기 시작하자마자, 매일 함께 기도했다는 것입니다. 그녀는 아이들에게 이렇게 말하곤 했습니다.
“내가 앞치마로 머리를 덮고 있으면, 하나님께 기도하는 중이니 방해하지 말아라.”
열 명의 아이들은 어머니가 기도하는 모습을 보았고, 그것은 그들의 삶을 바꾸었습니다. 수산나는 매일 두 시간씩 기도하며 이렇게 말했습니다.
“기도할 시간이 없다고 느낄 때일수록, 더 많은 시간을 만들어 기도해야 한다.”

John Wesley initiated Methodist Movement by praying regularly, reading the Bible, discussing spiritual lives, and collecting money for charity: “Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long as you ever you can.” (J. Wesley) John combined his personal piety for Christ with his social justice concerns: regularly visited local prisons, the poor widows, a home for orphans, and schools for poor children. Where did his holiness and social justice spirit come from?
His mother, Susanna Wesley. She had given birth to 19 children, only ten survived. Samuel Wesley, an Anglican priest, was put in prison due to his poor financial management, and the family often suffered from their lack of money. Susanna had to do all the chores by hand, teach the children, manage their little farmstead for milk, meat and eggs. An amazing thing in the midst of her busier and heavy works, she prayed with her children every day as soon as they could speak. She used to say to her children, “If you see me with my apron over my head, don’t disturb me because I am praying to God.” 10 children saw her praying, and it changed them. She prayed for two hours every day and said, “When we don’t have time to pray, we need to make more time for it.”
Her teaching to pray produced two giant spiritual leaders in the 18th century—John Wesley and Charles Wesley who wrote over 9,000 hymns of which we still sing today. John Wesley once said, “I learned more about Christianity from my mother than from all the theologians in England.”

“Help me, Lord, to remember that religion is not to be confined to the church… nor exercised only in prayer and meditation, but that everywhere I am in Thy Presence.”
