사순절 17: 연합감리교회 구제위원회

매일 아침 우리는 뉴스를 통해 지구촌 곳곳의 고통을 마주한다. 가뭄으로 타 들어 가는 대지, 지진과 홍수로 무너진 삶터, 전쟁의 포화 속에서 울부짖는 아이들의 모습, 우리는 이런 비극들을 너무 많이 접하면서, 무뎌진 마음으로 ‘나와 상관없는 먼 나라 이야기’로 여기며 외면하곤 한다. 하지만 그리스도의 사랑은 그 탄식의 자리를 넘어 고통의 현장으로 우리를 부르신다.

1940년, 세계는 2차 세계대전거대한 전쟁 속에 있었다. 수많은 사람들이 집을 잃었고, 수백만 명의 난민이 생겼다. 그때 우리 연합감리교회는 질문했다. “교회는 이런 불행을 두고 무엇을 해야 하는가?” 그 질문 속에서 탄생한 기관이 바로 연합감리교회 구제위원회 (The United Methodist Committee on Relief, UMCOR)다. UMCOR는 연합감리교회의 인도적 구호 및 복구 기관이다.

연합감리교회 구제위원회의 사명은 단순하다. 고통받는 곳이면 우리가 가장 먼저 달려 간다는 것이다. 지진이 일어나면 그곳으로 생필품과 구호물자를 들고, 달려가고, 전쟁 난민이 생기면 천막과 생수를 들고, 그곳으로 다가가고, 가뭄이나 홍수가 생기면 구호품과 의약품을 들고 그곳으로 달려간다. “무엇이 필요합니까? 우리가 여러분을 도우려 왔습니다.” 이 질문은 바로 사순절의 질문이다.

1950년 한국전쟁(Korean War) 이 일어났을 때 한국은 완전히 폐허가 되었다. 도시는 무너졌고, 사람들은 집을 잃었으며, 수많은 아이들이 고아가 되었다. 그때 UMCOR은 식량을 보내고, 의약품을 보내고, 전쟁 난민들을 돕고, 고아들을 돌보았다. 단순한 구호가 아니라, 교우들의 사랑의 손길이었다.

한국 전쟁 이후 세계 연합감리교회가 한국을 도왔다. 그 사랑의 손길 덕분에 한국은 다시 일어설 수 있었다. 이제 한국 교회는 받는 교회에서 나누는 교회로 성장 변화했다. 사랑은 이렇게 흐른다. 받은 사랑은 다시 흘러간 다. 그리고 그 사랑은 세상을 조금씩 바꾸어 간다.

UMCOR의 음식, 옷, 의약품, 교육 지원으로 어떤 아이는 그 도움 덕분에 학교에 갈 수 있었고, 어떤 아이는 의사가 되었고, 어떤 아이는 목회자가 되었다. UMCOR가 손을 내밀었고, 그 손이 바로 그리스도의 손이었다. UMCOR에는 중요한 UMCOR의 헌금이100% 현장으로 전달된다는 것이다. 작은 헌금 하나가 어떤 마을에서는 식수가 되고, 어떤 아이에게는 학교가 되고, 작은 헌금 하나가 어떤 가족에게는 집이 된다.

예수님은 우리를 위해 십자가를 지셨다. 그 십자가는 세상의 고통을 짊어진 사랑이었다. 그래서 교회도 그 사랑이 흐르는 통로가 된다. 굶주린 사람에게 빵이 되고, 절망한 사람에게 희망이 되고 상처 입은 세상에 치유가 되는 사랑의 통로, 그것이 바로 교회의 길이다. 하나님의 사랑이 세상에 드러나는 도구이며, 빛이며, 소금이다.

“Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” (Matthew 25:40)

Every morning we encounter the suffering of the world through the news. We see lands scorched by drought, homes destroyed by earthquakes and floods, and children crying out amid the fires of war. Yet because we see so many tragedies, our hearts can grow numb. We begin to treat them as distant stories—events happening in far-away places that seem unrelated to our lives. But the love of Christ calls us beyond simply hearing the cries of the world. It calls us to move toward the places of suffering.

In 1940 the world was engulfed in the great conflict of World War II. Countless people lost their homes, and millions became refugees. In that moment the church asked an important question: “What should the church do in the face of such suffering?” Out of that question came the creation of the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR), the humanitarian relief and recovery arm of The United Methodist Church.

The mission of UMCOR is simple: wherever people are suffering, the church goes there first. When earthquakes strike, it brings emergency supplies and relief materials. When war creates refugees, it brings tents and clean water. When drought or floods devastate communities, it brings food, medicine, and help. And it asks a simple question: “What do you need? We have come to help.”

In many ways, that is also the question of Lent.

When the Korean War broke out in 1950, Korea was left in ruins. Cities were destroyed, families lost their homes, and countless children were left orphaned. During that time UMCOR sent food and medicine, helped war refugees, and cared for orphans. It was not simply humanitarian aid—it was the loving hands of the church reaching out in Christ’s name.

After the Korean War, United Methodists around the world helped rebuild Korea. Through those acts of love, Korea was able to rise again. Today the Korean church has grown from a church that once received help into a church that now shares with others. This is how love flows: love that has been received flows outward again, slowly transforming the world.

Through UMCOR’s support—food, clothing, medicine, and education—some children were able to go to school. Some later became doctors. Some became pastors. Someone reached out a hand to them, and that hand was the hand of Christ.

A small offering can become clean water for a village.

A small offering can become a school for a child.

A small offering can become a home for a family.

Jesus carried the cross for us. That cross was love bearing the suffering of the world. In the same way, the church becomes a channel through which that love flows—bread for the hungry, hope for the despairing, and healing for a wounded world.

This is the calling of the church: to be the instrument through which God’s love is revealed in the world, the light and the salt of the earth.
