사순절 13: 연합감리교회 사회신조 (Social Creed)

사람들은 종종 신앙을 개인적인 것으로만 생각하기도 한다. 기도하고, 예배하고, 성경을 읽고 묵상하는 것은 매우 중요하다. 하지만 신앙생활은 세상속에서 빛과 소금의 역할도 감당해야 한다. 예배가 끝나면 우린 세상으로 빛과 소금의 역할을 하라고 파송을 받는다.

연합감리교회 사회신조는 미국의 산업화와 경제 성장이 급속도로 일어나던 시기에, 공장, 광산, 제분소, 도시 빈민가의 공동주택에서 거주하며 산업도시에서 일하는 수백만 명 노동자의 노동 착취에 대한 우려를 표하기 위해 1908년경에 시작되었다.

다섯 명의 감리교회 목회자들은 교단 내 사회를 위한 사역을 담당할 기관이 필요하다고 믿었다. 이분들이 UMCOR의 전신인 감리교 구호 기관을 창설한다. 한 목사가 축산농업 지역에서 목회하고 있을 때, 공장에서 사고사를 당하는 포장공장 노동자의 장례를 집례해야 할 경우가 많았다. 그는 노동자들이 고용환경을 향상하기 위해, 노동조합을 조직하고, 공장 노동자들을 염두에 두고 사회신조의 초안을 작성하면서 사회신경이 시작되었다.

교회가 이루어야 하는 11가지 사회 개혁 조항에는, 어린이 노동 착취와 착취 현장을 존속시키는 구조를 폐지하고, 노동자의 권익 보장과 최저 생계를 위한 임금 및 보다 안전한 작업환경을 보장하는 일 등이 포함되어 있다.

신앙생활이 개인의 차원에서 사회속으로 들어가 하나님의 나라를 구현해 내야 한다는 신앙고백인 것이다. 소금은 음식에 들어가면 맛을 낸다. 빛은 어둠속에서 빛날 때 의미가 있다. 마찬가지로 믿음도 세상속으로 들어가 소금과 빛의 역할을 할때 본연의 임무를 다한다.

사회신조 (Social Creed)는 모든 사람이 예외없이 하나님의 창조하신 귀한 존재임을 인정하고 차별없이 모든이를 사랑하는 것으로 시작한다. 가난한 사람, 부유한 사람, 장애가 있는 사람, 태어날 때 부터 장애를 안고 살아가는 사람, 세상 모든 사람은 누구를 막론하고 하나님앞에서 귀한 존재임을 인정하고 그렇게 살아야 한다는 고백이다.

또 이기적인 본능을 넘어서서 약자와 억압받는 사람들이 공정하고 따뜻한 세상이 되도록 노력해야 한다. 작은 친절을 베풀고, 어려운 사람을 돕고, 불의에 항거하여 좋은 세상을 만드는데 직접 헌신해야 한다.

우리가 살아가는 이기적인 세상은 늘 갈등과 분열이 많다. 생각이 달라 쉽게 다투고 서로를 미워하기도 한다. 그런 세상에 하나님은 화해의 사도로 우릴 보내셨다.

사랑을 실천하고, 정의를 세우고, 평화를 이루는 여러가지 구체적인 방법을 고백하는 것이 사회신조 혹은 사회신경이라 한다. 아주 귀한 감리교 전통을 DNA로 받았기에 감리교회가 가는 곳엔 병원이 생기고, 학교가 세워지고, UMCOR같은 재난구조팀이 항상 준비되어 있다. 이른바 개인의 경건함과 사회적 성화라는 두 축을 굳건히 견지하는 균현 잡힌 신앙생활을 하는 곳이다.

사회신경 기도문

정의의 하나님 아버지, 주께서 우리를 자비와 사랑의 사람들로 부르시고, 말로만이 아니라 행동으로 정의를 이루는 삶을 살도록 부르심을 감사드립니다. 오늘 이 날도 주께서 모든 나라와 모든 민족이 서로 미워하고 싸우는 길을 버리고 평화 가운데 살아가도록 부르시는 날임을 고백합니다.

가난한 이들의 하나님, 주께서 우리를 통해 도움이 필요한 이들에게 기쁜 소식이 전해지게 하시고, 절망 가운데 있는 이들에게 희망을 나누게 하옵소서. 주님께서 가난한 이들에게 기쁜 소식을 전하시고, 묶인 자들에게 자유를 선포하시며, 보지 못하는 이들의 눈을 열어 주시고, 억눌린 사람들을 해방하시는 은혜를 베풀어 주옵소서.

일하는 모든 노동자들의 하나님, 이 땅에서 땀 흘려 일하는 사람들을 기억하여 주시고, 모든 노동이 존중받게 하옵소서. 일하는 이들의 권리가 보호받게 하시고, 공정한 보상이 이루어지게 하시며, 모든 일터가 안전하고 정직한 곳이 되게 하옵소서.

사랑의 하나님, 우리의 가정과 이웃과 사회 가운데 있는 폭력과 미움이 사라지게 하옵소서. 전쟁과 갈등으로 혼란한 세상을 긍휼히 여기시고, 교만한 권력은 낮추시며, 억눌린 사람들을 들어 올려 주옵소서. 주님의 사랑이 우리의 삶과 세상 속에 흘러가게 하옵소서.

창조의 하나님, 주께서 맡겨 주신 이 아름다운 세상을 우리가 잘 돌보게 하시고, 정의와 자비가 함께 어우러지는 세상을 이루게 하옵소서. 이리가 어린 양과 함께 풀을 뜯는 평화의 세상을 바라보며, 그 나라를 이루기 위해 살아가는 주님의 백성이 되게 하옵소서. 우리 주 예수 그리스도의 이름으로 기도드립니다. 아멘. (2008년도 총회에서 채택된 사회신조 기도문)

“You are the salt of the earth. You are the light of the world.” (Matthew 5:13–16)

People often think faith is only something personal. Praying, worshiping, reading the Bible, and meditating on God’s word are very important. But faith does not stop there. Faith must also live and work in the world as salt and light. When worship ends, we are sent out into the world to live as salt and light.

The Social Creed of the United Methodist Church began around 1908. At that time, the United States was growing very fast because of industrialization and economic expansion. Millions of workers were working in factories, mines, mills, and crowded city housing. Many of them were treated unfairly and suffered from poor and dangerous working conditions.

Five Methodist pastors believed the church needed an organization to care about social problems. They helped start a relief ministry that later became part of the United Methodist mission work. One pastor served in a farming and livestock area, but many workers in nearby packing factories died in accidents. He often had to lead their funerals. This made him deeply concerned about the lives of workers. As workers began organizing labor unions to improve their conditions, he started writing the first draft of the Social Creed with factory workers in mind.

The church proposed eleven social reforms. These included ending child labor and the systems that allowed it, protecting workers’ rights, providing a living wage, and creating safer working conditions.

This is a confession of faith that says faith should not stay only in a person’s private life. Faith must enter society and help bring God’s kingdom into the world. Salt gives flavor only when it goes into food. Light has meaning only when it shines in the darkness. In the same way, faith shines when it enters the world and becomes salt and light.

The Social Creed begins with the belief that every person is a precious creation of God. It calls us to love all people without discrimination. Poor people, rich people, people with disabilities, and people who are born with many limitations—every person in the world is precious before God. We must recognize this and live that way.

It also calls us to move beyond selfish instincts. We must work so that the weak and the oppressed can live in a fair and compassionate world. We are called to show small acts of kindness, help those in need, and stand against injustice so that we can build a better world.

A selfish world is full of conflict and division. People easily argue and hate one another because they think differently. But God sends us into that kind of world as messengers of reconciliation.

The Social Creed is a statement that expresses many practical ways to live out love, justice, and peace. Because this is a precious Methodist tradition, wherever Methodist mission has gone, hospitals have been built, schools have been founded, and churches have been planted among them.

God of justice,

Thank you for calling us to be people of compassion and love, and to live lives that practice justice not only with words but also with actions. Today we confess that you call all nations and all people to turn away from hatred and conflict and to live together in peace.

God of the poor,

Let good news reach those in need through us. Help us share hope with those who are in despair. Proclaim freedom to those who are bound, open the eyes of those who cannot see, and bring release to those who are oppressed.

God of all workers,

Remember those who work hard with sweat and labor. Let all work be respected. Protect the rights of workers, provide fair wages, and make every workplace safe and honest.

God of love,

Remove violence and hatred from our homes, our neighborhoods, and our societies. Have mercy on a world troubled by war and conflict. Humble the proud and lift up those who are oppressed. Let your love flow through our lives into the world.

God of creation,

Help us care for this beautiful world you have entrusted to us. Let justice and mercy grow together in our world. Help us live as your people while we look forward to the day of peace, when even the wolf and the lamb will live together. We pray in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
