사순절 8: 어둠에서 빛을 본 헬렌켈러 (Helen Keller)

보지 못하고 듣지 못한 사람이 어떻게 다른 사람의 도움없이 어떻게 세상을 살아 나갈까? 시각과 청각이라는 두 가지 한계를 모두 지닌 사람이 어떻게 장애인을 위한 위대한 옹호자가 될 수 있었을까? 헬렌 켈러라는 작가다.

헬렌 켈러는 생후 한 살만에 시각과 청각을 모두 잃었다. 암흑속에서 살게 된 것이다. 그러나 엔 설리번 선생을 만나면서 그녀에게 세상이 열리게 된다. 설리번 선생은 인형을 가져와 헬렌의 손바닥에 “인형”이라고 써 주고, 집 밖 우물가로 데려가 한 손을 물에 담그고 다른 손에는 “물”이라고 써 주었다. 사물과 글자를 연결하여 의미를 전달하는 기적 같은 소통이 시작된 것이다. 설리번은 헬렌보다 14살이 많았으며, ‘기적을 일으킨 사람’으로 불리게 되었다.

헬렌 켈러는 장애를 딛고, 래드클리프 대학을 졸업하여 학사 학위를 받은 최초의 시청각 중복 장애인이 되었다. 헬렌 켈러는 엄청난 장애를 극복한 용기의 상징으로 전 세계에 알려져 있으며, 평생 수많은 사람들이 자신의 장애를 넘어 건강하고 생산적인 삶을 살도록 돕는 일에 헌신했다. 작가이자 교육자, 정치 활동가, 그리고 장애인 권익을 위한 옹호자가 된 것이다.

헬렌 켈러는 단지 자신의 장애만 극복한 사람이 아니었다. 그녀는 듣지도 말하지도 못하지만 장애인의 교육을 위해 일했고, 노동자의 권리를 위해 목소리를 냈으며, 여성의 참정권을 지지했고, 전쟁과 폭력을 반대했다. 헬렌은 보지 못했지만 세상의 부조리와 불평등을 보았고, 듣지 못했지만 고통받는 사람들의 부르짖음을 들었다. 헬렌 켈러는 단순히 장애를 극복한 인물을 넘어, 사회정의를 위해 적극적으로 행동한 운동가였다. 그녀는 장애인을 동정의 대상이 아니라 권리를 가진 시민으로 보도록 세상의 인식을 바꾸었다.

헬렌 켈러는 장애의 문제가 개인의 불행이 아니라 가난과 열악한 노동환경이 만들어낸 사회 구조가 문제라고 보았다. 노동자의 권리를 옹호하며, 산업재해로 시력을 잃는 노동자들의 현실을 고발했으며, 최저임금과 노동조건 개선을 위해 노력했다. 헬렌은 여성 참정권을 지지하며, 여성의 교육과 사회참여 확대를 주장하였다. 당시 많은 백인 지도자들이 침묵하던 시대에 흑인 차별 문제에 대해서도 공개적으로 비판하였다.

사순절은 우리의 눈을 열고, 귀를 열어 하나님의 마음을 보는 시간이다. 예수님은 가장 낮은 자리로 내려오셨다. 버림받은 자의 자리, 고통받는 자의 자리, 억눌린 자의 자리에 서셨다.그리고 그 자리에서

하나님의 사랑을 나타내 보여 주셨다.

십자가는 눈과 귀가 닫힌 문처럼 보인다. 그러나 그것은 부활로 열린다. 하나님은 사랑이시기 때문이다. 헬렌켈러처럼 마음의 눈으로, 사랑의 귀로 세상의 고통을 듣고 함께 하는 사순절이 되기를 기도한다.

헬렌 켈러의 기도:

“나는 날마다 세 가지를 하나님께 감사드린다:

그분의 일을 알게 해 주신 것에 감사드리며,

내 어둠 속에 믿음의 등불을 밝혀 주신 것에 깊이 감사드리고,

빛과 꽃과 하늘, 노래로 기쁨이 가득한 세상을 알게 해 주신 하나님께

가장 깊이 감사드린다.”

How can a person who cannot see or hear live in this world without help? How could someone with both of these limits become a great voice for people with disabilities? That person was Helen Keller.

Helen Keller lost both her sight and hearing when she was just one year old. She lived in complete darkness. But when she met her teacher, Anne Sullivan, her world began to open. Miss Sullivan put a doll in Helen’s hand and spelled the word “doll” into her palm. She then took Helen to the well, let water run over one hand, and spelled “water” into the other. For the first time, Helen understood that things had names. It was the beginning of a miracle of communication. Anne Sullivan was fourteen years older than Helen and was later called “the miracle worker.”

Helen Keller overcame her disability and graduated from Radcliffe College, becoming the first deaf-blind person to earn a bachelor’s degree. She became known around the world as a symbol of courage. All her life she worked to help people live healthy and meaningful lives beyond their disabilities. She was a writer, a teacher, a social activist, and a strong advocate for the rights of people with disabilities.

Helen did more than overcome her own limits. Though she could not hear or speak, she worked for the education of people with disabilities, spoke up for workers’ rights, supported women’s right to vote, and opposed war and violence. She could not see, yet she saw injustice and inequality. She could not hear, yet she heard the cries of those who suffered. She helped the world see people with disabilities not as objects of pity but as citizens with rights.

Helen believed disability was not simply a personal tragedy. She said it was often caused by poverty and unsafe working conditions. She defended workers who lost their sight in industrial accidents and called for better wages and working conditions. She supported women’s voting rights and greater opportunities for women in education and public life. At a time when many white leaders were silent, she also spoke openly against racism.

Lent is a time for our eyes and ears to be opened to God’s heart. Jesus came down to the lowest place— the place of the rejected, the suffering, and the oppressed. And there He showed God’s love.

The cross may look like a closed door to our eyes and ears. But it opens into the resurrection, because God is love. Like Helen Keller, may we see with the eyes of the heart and listen with the ears of love, and share in the suffering of the world during this Lenten season.

I thank Him for letting me know His work.

I deeply thank God for lighting the lamp of faith in my darkness.

And I thank God most of all for helping me look toward another life filled with joy— with light, flowers, and the song of heaven.
