목회서신 – 더 큰 사역을 위하여!

목회서신 – 5월 16일

우리 교회가 세워진 지 어느덧49년이 흘러 곧 희년을 맞습니다. 그동안 참으로 수많은 교우님이 이 제단을 통해 양육되고, 복음의 기쁨을 맛보았습니다. “산천은 의구하되 인걸은 간 데없다”는 옛 시조를 읊조리지 않더라도, 정든 교회 건물을 바라보고 화단을 정성껏 가꾸시던 어르신들을 기억하다 보면 절로 가슴이 먹먹해 집니다.

그간 우리 교회 안에도 공동체를 이루어 감격했던 순간들도 많았고, 주님의 일꾼들을 세우는 기쁨, 이민사회를 섬기는 보람도 컸습니다. 좋은 교회를 섬겨보려다 뜻하지 않은 어려움을 겪기도 했습니다. 하지만 기쁜 일도, 슬픈 일도 함께 나누며 하나님의 신실하신 은혜 가운데 우리는 여기까지 올 수 있었습니다.

희극인 찰리 채플린은 이런 말을 남겼습니다. “인생은 가까이서 보면 비극이지만, 멀리서 보면 희극이다.” 카메라 렌즈를 눈앞에 바짝 들이대고 삶의 한 단면만 바라보면, 그 안에는 눈물과 아픔, 그리고 갈등이라는 비극이 크게 보이기 마련입니다. 지금 우리들이 느끼시는 아쉬움과 섭섭함, 지난 49년 동안 이 제단에 바치신 땀방울과 기도의 숨결을 생각하면 가슴 한구석이 아려 오는 분들이 많으실 줄 압니다. 먼저 떠나간 이들에 대한 그리움에 사무치는 분들도 계실 것입니다. 눈앞의 현실만 보면 참으로 안타까운 일입니다.

그러나 하나님이 행하시는 큰일을 먼발치에서 바라볼 때, 우리는 비로소 큰 위로를 얻게 됩니다. 하나님의 눈으로 바라본 우리 교회의 49년은 결코 슬픔이 아닙니다. 이 땅에 심겨 수많은 생명의 열매를 맺어온 찬란한 기쁨의 역사였습니다. 그러므로 지금 우리의 결정은 더 큰 하나님의 나라를 위해 다른 형제 교회와 하나가 되는 ‘거룩한 연합’의 시작입니다.

우리가 정든 성전의 떠나 교회를 옮기는 것은 더 깊은 곳으로 그물을 던지기 위해 배를 옮겨 타는 과정입니다. 가까이서 볼 때는 정든 교회를 떠나는 아쉬움이 있지만, 하나님의 거대한 계획 속에서 멀리서 바라보면 이것은 더 큰 승리와 기쁨, 즉 하나님이 하시는 은혜의 드라마입니다.

우리가 비록 부르심에 따라 처소는 옮기지만, 지난 49년 동안 우리를 빚어 오신 하나님의 은혜는 성도님들 한 분 한 분의 삶 속에 고스란히 남아 새로운 공동체에서 더 밝게 빛날 것입니다. 세대와 세대를 잇고, 서로 다른 역사를 가진 이들이 만나 그리스도 안에서 온전한 하나를 이루는 그 기적의 현장으로, 이제 신뢰와 기대를 가지고 걸어 가십시다. 눈앞의 아쉬움을 넘어, 더 큰 연합의 기쁨을 예비하신 주님을 찬양합니다.

비록 저마다 다른 의견과 아쉬움이 있었음에도 불구하고, 더 큰 하나님의 계획과 비전을 바라보며 기꺼이 마음을 모아 주신 교우 여러분께 고개 숙여 깊은 감사를 드립니다. 돌아보면 부족함 많은 제가 지난 2년의 시간을 여러분과 함께 동역할 수 있었던 것은 참으로 큰 기쁨이자 특권이었습니다.

무엇보다 우리 교회의 청장년들이 공동체의 미래에 적극적으로 관심을 두고, 더 헌신적인 마음으로 교회를 섬기고자 뜻을 모아준 것은 저에게 큰 위로이자 기쁨이었습니다. 기적처럼 아름다운 공동체를 구성하여 내일을 준비해 나가는 ‘EC’의 발걸음은, 이제 새로운 도약(희년)을 맞이하는 우리 교회에 하나님께서 주신 가장 큰 선물입니다.

이제 우리는 함께 꿈꾸었던 미래를 현실로 가꾸기 위해, 광고한 데로 ‘교인 총회’를 개최하고자 합니다. 이에 앞서 지난 2026년 5월 10일 오후 7시 30분에 열린 임원회에서는, North Andover에 위치한 First United Methodist Church로의 이전과 이에 따른 현 교회 건물 매각의 건을 논의하였습니다. 감사하게도 이 중요한 안건은 우리 지방회의 메이건 스토우(Megan Stowe) 감리사님을 모시고 열릴 이번 교인 총회에 ‘만장일치’로 상정하기로 결의되었습니다. 많이 참석해 주셔서 기쁜 마음, 한마음, 한 뜻으로 새로운 출발의 닻을 올리는 복된 자리를 만들어 주시기를 간곡히 부탁드립니다. 솔직하게 의견을 개진해 주시고, 또 더 큰 교회의 연합을 위해 마음을 모아 주신 여러분들께 깊이 감사드립니다.

1. 북부보스톤 교회는 North Andover에 있는 First UMC 교회로 이전한다. NBKUMC와 First UMC와 건물을 함께 사용하든지 온전한 연합을 하는지에 관한 것은 추후 양측 교회가 논의한다.
2. 244 Lowell Street, Andover, MA에 있는 북부보스톤 교회의 건물은 매각한다.

Pastoral Letter May 16, 2026

“Do not remember the former things, or consider the things of old. I am about to do a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?” (Isaiah 43:18-19)

Dearly beloved,

Forty-nine years have passed since our church was first planted in this land, and we are now standing on the cusp of our Jubilee year. Over nearly half a century, countless saints have been nurtured through this altar, tasting the profound joy of the Gospel. Even without reciting the old verse, “The mountains and rivers remain unchanged, yet the people of old are gone,” my heart swells with deep emotion whenever I look at our cherished church building and remember the elders who so tenderly cared for our flower beds.

Throughout these years, our community has journeyed through many seasons of change. There were moments of overwhelming grace as we built this community together, immense joy in erecting faithful church leaders, and deep fulfillment in serving our immigrant community and people. At times, in our earnest desire to serve a good church, we also encountered unexpected hardships. Yet, by sharing both our joys and sorrows under God’s steadfast grace, we have faithfully made it to this very day.

The legendary comedian Charlie Chaplin once said: “Life is a tragedy when seen in close-up, but a comedy in long-shot.” If we bring the camera lens too close to focus on just a single cross-section of life, the “close-up” inevitably magnifies the tragedies of tears, pain, and conflict. Knowing how much sweat, tears, and prayerful breath you have poured into this altar over the past 49 years, I know that many of your hearts are aching with a sense of sorrow and lingering regret. Some among us may also be deeply aching with longing for those who have already departed before us. Looking solely at our immediate reality, this moment indeed feels deeply painful.

However, I now invite us to widen our focus and look through the lens of faith. When we behold the great things, God is doing from a broader perspective, we find profound comfort. Seen from afar through God’s eyes, the 49-year history of our church is by no means a regret. It is a radiant history of joy, a single grain of wheat planted in this ground that has borne abundant spiritual fruit. Therefore, our current decision is not an end or a dissolution; rather, it is the beginning of a ‘holy covenant’—uniting with our sister church for the greater Kingdom of God.

Moving from our cherished sanctuary is not a failure. It is the very process of stepping onto another boat so that we may cast our nets into deeper waters, just as Jesus commanded. What feels like the pain of parting in the close-up of today is, in God’s grand design, the opening chapter of a beautiful “drama of grace” leading toward a greater ministry.

Despite differing opinions and the natural sorrow of parting, I extend my deepest gratitude to each and every one of you for uniting your hearts and minds under God’s greater plan and vision. Looking back, it has been an absolute joy and privilege to shepherd and minister alongside you over the past two years.

Above all, seeing our young adults and families take an active interest in the future of our community, and witnessing their devoted commitment to serving the church, has brought me immense comfort and bright hope. The steps taken by our EC, which was miraculously formed to prepare for our tomorrow, are indeed the greatest gift from God to our church as we mark this momentous Jubilee.

Now, to bring the future we have envisioned together into reality, we invite the entire congregation to gather for our upcoming Church Conference.

Prior to this, at the Administrative meeting held on May 10, 2026, at 7:30 PM, we carefully deliberated on relocating to First UMC in North Andover and the subsequent sale of our current church property. Thanks to your prayers, it was unanimously decided to present this proposal as a formal motion at the upcoming Church Conference, which will be presided over by our District Superintendent, Rev. Megan Stow.

I earnestly hope that the unified heart and vision demonstrated by our church leadership will beautifully carry over into our Church Conference. I warmly invite all of you to attend so that, with one heart and one mind, we may joyfully set sail toward this new beginning.

It is my fervent prayer that our unified decision and obedience will bear abundant and beautiful fruit for the Kingdom of God and our future ministries.

1. Approval of Relocation of NBKUMC to First UMC in North Andover.(Both churches will discuss later whether to share a building or fully unite.)
2. Approval of selling the current building. (The method of the sale will be determined at a later date.)
