사순절 20: 연합감리교회 여성지위향상위원회

내가 처음 미국에서 목사 안수를 받았던 해는 1992년이었다. 낯선 땅에서의 새로운 시작이었고, 모든 것이 서툴고 긴장되던 시기였다. 그때 한 나이가 지긋한 여성 목사님이 다가와 나를 꼭 안아 주었다. 미국에 온 지 얼마 되지 않았고, 여성 목사를 가까이에서 본 경험도 거의 없었기에 그 모습이 낯설기도 했다. 그러나 그분이 나를 안아 주며 등을 토닥여 격려해 주실 때, 나는 처음으로 목사의 품에서 어머니의 따뜻함을 느꼈다.

감리사로 일할 때, 나는 미국 목사들과 평신도 약 40여 명을 인솔하여 한국 교회와 선교지를 방문하는 일을 매년 했고, 그것이 7년 동안 이어졌다. 미국에서 온 목사들과 평신도들은 한국의 놀라운 발전과 교회의 활력을 보며 감탄을 금치 못했다. 그러나 한 가지 질문이 늘 반복되었다. “여자 목사는 없습니까?” 한국 교회의 화려한 건물과 열정적인 사역을 보면서도, 대부분의 지도력은 남성 목사들이 맡고 있었고 여성들은 대개 보조 역할이나 식당 봉사였다. 여자 동료목사들이 그 질문을 할 때마다 나는 곤혹스러웠다.

사실, 여성의 지위가 낮았던 고대 사회 속에서도 예수님은 여성들과 공개적으로 대화하셨고, 그들을 제자로 받아들이셨다. 부활의 첫 증인 역시 여성들이었다. 십자가의 고통 속에서도 끝까지 그 곁을 지킨 이들 또한 여성들이었다. 여성을 사역의 주변부에 두는 것은 성경의 정신과 거리가 있다. 여성은 단순한 보조자가 아니라 하나님 나라를 함께 세워 가는 동등한 사역의 동반자다.

이러한 성경적 통찰을 제도적으로 실천하려 했던 교단이 바로 우리 연합감리교회였다. 우리 감리교회는 1972년 총회에서 General Commission on the Status and Role of Women(여성지위향상위원회)를 설립했다. 이 위원회의 목적은 단순히 여성들을 돕는 것이 아니었다. 교회의 모든 영역—총회, 연회, 그리고 개교회—에서 여성들이 온전히 참여하고 평등한 기회를 가질 수 있도록 돕고 감시하는 역할을 맡았다. 성별과 상관없이 모든 사람이 하나님께 받은 은사를 제한 없이 사용할 수 있는 교회 문화를 만들려는 시도였다.

이 위원회는 교단 안에서 다양한 노력을 펼쳤다. 성차별을 없애기 위한 교육, 여성 리더십 개발, 사역 현장에서의 성희롱과 부적절한 행동을 예방하기 위한 “Safe Sanctuaries” 운동, 그리고 각 위원회와 지도 구조 안에서 여성들이 실제로 동등하게 참여하고 있는지를 꾸준히 점검하는 일들이었다.

남녀 평등은 여성만의 과제가 아니다. 남성과 여성이 함께 하나님의 형상을 더 온전하게 드러내기 위한 공동의 책임이다. 여성만이 가진 통찰과 은사, 남성이 가진 은사가 함께 어우러질 때 교회의 사역은 훨씬 더 풍성해지고, 건강해진다. 반대로 어느 한쪽의 은사가 억눌리거나 사라지면, 그것은 결국 교회 전체의 손실이 된다.

그래서 여성지위향상위원회는 단순히 여성의 권리를 보호하는 기관이 아니라, 교회가 자신의 본래 모습을 잃지 않도록 돕는 “교회의 양심”과 같은 역할을 하였다. 이것은 남녀가 경쟁하는 관계가 아니라 하나님 나라를 위해 함께 부름 받은 거룩한 동역자임을 일깨워 주는 선구적인 시도였다.

사순절, 우리는 십자가 아래 다시 모인다. 그곳에는 높고 낮음이 없으며, 차별과 배제도 없다. 오직 그리스도의 보혈로 씻김 받은 평등한 영혼들만이 존재한다. 우리 연합감리교회가 ‘여성지위향상위원회’를 통해 보여준 선구적 노력은 우리를 향한 하나님의 준엄한 명령에 대한 응답이었다. 십자가의 길은 곧 평등의 길이며, 만물을 새롭게 하시는 부활의 승리다. 이 사순절에 우리 안에 여전히 남아있는 차별의 시선을 거두고 서로를 존중하며 함께 성장하면 좋겠다.

United Methodist Commission on the Status and Role of Women

“So God created humankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.” (Genesis 1:27)

The year I was first ordained as a pastor in the United States was 1992. It was a new beginning in a foreign land, and everything felt unfamiliar and tense. During that time, a woman pastor came up to me and gave me a warm hug. I had not been in America very long, and I had almost no experience working closely with women pastors, so the moment felt a little unusual to me. But when she hugged me and gently patted my back to encourage me, I felt something new—warmth that felt almost like a mother’s care coming from a fellow pastor.

Later, when I served as a district superintendent, I led a group of about forty American pastors and lay leaders to visit churches and mission sites in Korea each year for seven years. The visitors from the United States were always amazed by Korea’s rapid development and the strong energy of its churches. However, one question came up again and again: “Are there any women pastors?”

Even though people admired the beautiful church buildings and passionate ministries, most leadership roles were held by men. Women were often serving in supporting roles or helping in the kitchen. Whenever my women clergy colleagues asked that question, I felt a bit uncomfortable because I did not know how to answer it well.

In truth, even in the ancient world where women had low social status, Jesus openly spoke with women and accepted them as his disciples. Women were the first witnesses of the resurrection. Women also stayed close to Jesus even during the suffering of the cross. Placing women on the edges of ministry does not match the spirit of the Bible. Women are not simply helpers; they are equal partners in building the kingdom of God.

The United Methodist Church tried to put this biblical understanding into practice through its structure. In 1972, the denomination established the General Commission on the Status and Role of Women. The purpose of this commission was not simply to support women. Its role was to help and monitor the church so that women could fully participate and have equal opportunities in every area of church life—at the General Conference, in annual conferences, and in local churches. The goal was to create a church culture where every person could use the gifts God has given them, regardless of gender.

The commission worked in several important ways. It provided education to reduce sexism, helped develop women’s leadership, and supported efforts like the Safe Sanctuaries movement to prevent sexual harassment and inappropriate behavior in ministry settings. It also regularly checked whether women were truly participating equally in leadership structures and church committees.

Equality between men and women is not only a women’s issue. It is a shared responsibility. Men and women together reflect the image of God more fully. When the insights and gifts of women and men work together, the ministry of the church becomes richer and healthier. But when the gifts of one group are ignored or suppressed, the whole church loses something valuable.

For this reason, the Commission on the Status and Role of Women is not simply an organization that protects women’s rights. It serves more like the conscience of the church, helping the church remain faithful to its true calling. Its work reminds us that men and women are not competitors, but partners who are called together to serve God’s kingdom.

During Lent, we gather again at the foot of the cross. At the cross there is no higher or lower status, no discrimination, and no exclusion. There are only equal souls who have been washed by Christ’s grace. The pioneering efforts of the United Methodist Church through the Commission on the Status and Role of Women were a response to God’s call for justice and faithfulness. The way of the cross is also the way of equality, leading to the victory of resurrection that renews all things. This Lent, may we put aside any attitudes of discrimination that still remain in us. May we respect one another and grow together.
