사순절 14: 윌리엄 윌버포스William Wilberforce (1759–1833)

하나님은 한 사람의 인생을 통해 역사를 바꾸신다, 사순절을 지나고 있는 자신에게 한번 물어 보자: 나의 신앙은 단지 마음속의 경건으로 끝나는가, 아니면 세상을 바꾸는 작은 힘이라도 보내고 있는가?

오늘 이 질문을 가지고 영국의 정치인이자 사회개혁가였던 윌리엄 윌버포스의 삶을 묵상해 보려 한다.

윌리엄 윌버포스는 1759년 영국에서 부유한 가정에서 태어났다. 젊은 시절 그는 재능도 있었고 정치적으로도 성공했다. 스물한 살에 이미 영국 의회의 의원이 되었으니 말이다. 그가 활동했던 곳은 영국의 입법기관인 House of Commons 이었다.

그러나 그 시기의 윌버포스는 신앙적으로 깊지 않았고, 사회 문제에 대해서도 특별한 관심이 있는 사람은 아니었다. 정치와 사교 모임을 즐기며 살던 평범한 귀족 정치인이었을 뿐이다..

그러던 어느 날 그의 인생에 중요한 변화, 신앙의 회심이 인생의 방향을 바꾸어 놓는다

20대 후반에 그는 깊은 신앙적 변화를 경험하고는 이렇게 자신에게 묻는다. “내가 정치인이 된 것이 하나님의 뜻이라면, 나는 무엇을 위해 정치해야 하는가?” 그때 그의 삶에 중요한 영향을 준 사람이 있었으니, 노예제 폐지 운동가였던 Thomas Clarkson 이었다.

그 당시 영국은 아프리카 사람들을 붙잡아 노예로 만들어 배에 싣고 대서양을 건너 서인도 제도로 보내고 있었다. 인간이 상품처럼 팔리고 있었던 것이다. 노예선 안에서는 수많은 사람들이 질병과 굶주림 속에서 죽어 갔다. 이 사실을 처음 알게 된 윌버포스는 마음이 무너졌다. 그리고 이렇게 결심한다. “하나님께서 나를 의회에 보내신 이유가 있다면, 그것은 이 불의를 멈추기 위한 것이 아닐까?”

윌버포스는 의회에서 노예무역을 금지하는 법안을 제출하기 시작했다. 그러나 현실은 매우 냉담했다. 아무리 고상한 법안이라 해도, 노예무역은 당시 영국 경제에 큰 이익을 가져다 주는 산업이었다. 많은 정치인들과 상인들이 강하게 반대했다. 법안은 번번이 부결되었다. 하지만 그는 포기하지 않고 매년 법안을 제출하였고 무려18년 동안 계속되었다. 사람들은 그를 비웃었다. 그가 너무 이상적인 사람이라고 말이다. 하지만 그는 멈추지 않았다. 하나님이 주신 그의 사명이라고 믿었기 때문이다.

마침내 1807년, 영국 의회는 노예무역을 금지하는 법을 통과시켰다. 이것은 역사적인 순간이었다. 하지만 윌버포스는 여기서 멈추지 않았다. 노예무역이 금지되었지만 이미 노예가 된 사람들은 여전히 자유를 얻지 못했기 때문이다. 그의 싸움은 계속되었다. 그리고 마침내 1833년, 영국 제국 전체에서 노예를 해방하는 법이 통과되었다. 그리고 윌버포스는 그 소식을 들은 지 며칠 후 그는 세상을 떠난다.

그는 런던의 웨스터민스터 사원에(Westminster Abbey) 에 묻혔다. 그러나 그의 삶은 우리에게 분명히 보여 주었으니 하나님은 한사람의 믿음으로 역사를 바꾸졌다.

사순절은 단지 금식하고 묵상하는 시간만이 아니다. 사순절은 우리의 삶을 하나님 앞에서 다시 방향 잡는 시간이다. 윌버포스의 삶에 나타나셨던 하나님이 우리에게 세 가지 질문을 던지신다: 나는 세상의 고통을 의식하며 살고 있는가? 세상의 불의를 보면서도 침묵하고 있지는 않은가? 나는 너무 쉽게 포기하고 있지는 않은가?

우리 모두가 윌버포스처럼 국회의원이 될 필요는 없다. 하지만 우리 각자에게도 하나님이 맡기신 책임이 있을 것이다. 우선 가까운 주변을 돌아보며, 외로운 사람, 우리의 도움이 필요한 사람을 찾아보자. 좋은 일이 당장 이루어지지 않아도 포기하지 않고 꾸준히 노력하자. 그것이 우리 각자에게 맡기신 소명이기 때문이다.

주님, 주님의 살아 있는 성령으로 저를 붙들어 주십시오.

주님이 함께하지 않으시면 저는 아무것도 할 수 없습니다.

제 마음속에 있는 잘못된 욕심과 허영심과 자랑하려는 마음, 세상적인 욕망과 교만, 이기적인 마음과

하나님의 뜻을 거스르려는 마음을 없애 주십시오.

그리고 제 마음을 사랑과 평안으로 채워 주시고

성령의 아름다운 열매로 가득하게 해 주십시오.

주님, 저 자신이 어떤 사람인지도 저는 잘 알지 못합니다.

The Abolitionist, William Wilberforce

(1759–1833)

“Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves. Defend the rights of the poor and needy.” (Proverbs 31:8–9)

During Lent, it is good to ask ourselves a question: Is my faith only something inside my heart, or does it also help change the world, even in a small way?

God can change history through one person. Today we reflect on the life of William Wilberforce, a British politician and social reformer.

Wilberforce was born in England in 1759 into a wealthy family. As a young man he was talented and successful in politics. At only twenty-one years old he became a member of the British Parliament. He served in the House of Commons.

But in those early years, Wilberforce was not very serious about faith. He was not especially interested in social problems either. He lived like many young politicians—enjoying politics, society, and social gatherings.

Then something important happened in his life. He experienced a deep change in his faith, and it changed the direction of his life. In his late twenties he asked himself a serious question: “If God wanted me to become a politician, what should I use my position for?”

Around that time he met an abolitionist named Thomas Clarkson, who strongly influenced him. In those days Britain was deeply involved in the slave trade. African people were captured, forced onto ships, and taken across the Atlantic Ocean to the West Indies to be sold as slaves. Human beings were treated like goods to be bought and sold. On the slave ships many people died from disease, hunger, and terrible conditions.

When Wilberforce learned about this, his heart was deeply troubled. He began to think: “Maybe God placed me in Parliament so that I could help stop this injustice.”

So he began introducing bills in Parliament to end the slave trade. But the situation was very difficult. The slave trade made a lot of money for Britain’s economy. Many politicians and merchants strongly opposed his efforts. His bills failed again and again.

Still, he did not give up. Every year he introduced the bill again. He continued for 18 years. Some people laughed at him. They said he was too idealistic. But he kept going because he believed this was the work God had given him to do.

Finally, in 1807, the British Parliament passed a law to end the slave trade. It was a historic moment. But Wilberforce did not stop there. The slave trade had ended, but many people were still slaves. So he continued working for their freedom. At last, in 1833, a law was passed that freed slaves throughout the British Empire. Just a few days after hearing this news, Wilberforce died.

He was buried in Westminster Abbey. His life clearly shows us something important: God can change history through the faith of one person.

Lent is not only a time for fasting and quiet reflection. It is also a time to think about the direction of our lives before God. The life of Wilberforce asks us three questions:

Do I notice the suffering in the world around me?

Do I stay silent when I see injustice?

Do I give up too easily?

We do not all need to become members of Parliament like Wilberforce. But each of us has a responsibility that God has given us. We can start by looking around us. We can care for people who are lonely or in need. And even if change does not happen quickly, we can keep trying and not give up. That may be the calling God has given to each of us.

A Prayer of William Wilberforce

O Lord, hold me with your living Spirit.

Without you I can do nothing.

Take away the wrong desires in my heart—

my pride, selfishness, and desire for praise.

Remove anything that pulls me away from you.

Fill my heart instead with love and peace

and with the good fruits of your Spirit.

Lord, I do not fully understand myself,

so I come to you for safety and help.

I give myself to you completely.

I trust your promises.

Even when hope seems far away,

help me continue to live with hope.
