사순절 3: 오스카 로메로

오스카 아르눌포 로메로(1917–1980)는엘살바도르에서 태어난 가톨릭 사제이며, 후에 산살바도르 대주교가 되었다. 처음의 로메로는 조용하고 체제를 거스르지 않는 성직자였다. 그러나 그의 친구였던 루틸리오 그란데 신부가 가난한 농민들과 함께하다가 살해당하는 사건을 통해 그는 눈을 뜬다. 그때 그는 “백성의 고통 속에 그리스도가 계심”을 깨닫고, 그의 설교는 달라졌다. 매 주일, 죽어간 사람들의 이름을 불렀고, 불의한 권력을 향해 진실을 말했고, 교회를 고통받는 사람들의 집으로 만들었다. 1980년 3월 24일, 그는 미사를 집전하던 중 군부와 연계된 암살단에 의해 총격을 받고 순교했다.

로메로의 삶은 교회의 방향을 바꾸어 놓았다. 그는 교회가 누구의 편에 서야 하는지를 분명하게 보여 주었다. 교회는 언제나 고통받는 사람들의 곁에 서 있어야 한다. 이것은 정치적인 선택이 아니라 복음적인 선택이다. 예수의 삶 자체가 그러했기 때문이다. 예수는 가난한 자에게 복음을 전하셨고, 병든 자를 고치셨으며, 사회적으로 버림받은 사람들과 함께 식탁에 앉으셨다. 그렇다면 예수를 따르는 교회도 동일한 자리에 서야 한다.

이민교회는 하나님의 특별한 은혜를 경험한 공동체다. 낯선 땅에서의 정착, 자녀들의 성장, 경제적인 안정은 분명 감사한 일이다. 그러나 신앙이 거기에서 멈출 때 교회는 점점 자기 안으로만 향하게 된다. 신앙이 개인의 평안과 가정의 형통을 위한 도구로 축소될 때, 복음은 더 이상 세상을 향한 능력이 되지 못한다. 교회 주변에는 여전히 외로운 노인들이 있고, 언어의 장벽 때문에 고립된 이민자들이 있으며, 경제적인 어려움 속에서 살아가는 가정들이 있다. 또한 신분 문제로 두려움 속에 살아가는 사람들도 있다. 그들을 향해 다가가는 것이야 말로 오늘 우리가 살아내야 할 제자도의 모습이다.

또 하나의 중요한 도전은 침묵의 문제다. 교회는 갈등을 피하기 위해 침묵을 선택하는 데 익숙하다. 평화를 유지하기 위한 침묵은 필요할 때도 있지만, 불의 앞에서의 침묵은 복음을 가리는 일이 된다. 차별과 혐오, 약자에 대한 무관심이 일상적인 문화가 될 때 교회가 아무 말도 하지 않는다면 세상은 교회를 통해 하나님의 정의를 보지 못한다. 교회가 말해야 할 것은 정치적 구호가 아니라 복음의 가치다. 모든 사람은 하나님의 형상대로 지음받았다는 사실, 생명은 존귀하다는 사실, 약자는 보호받아야 한다는 사실, 정직과 공의는 신앙의 열매라는 사실을 교회는 삶으로 드러내야 한다.

지역의 푸드뱅크를 섬기고, 노숙자 사역에 참여하고, 지역 학교를 돕고, 외로운 교인을 찾아가는 일은 거창해 보이지 않지만 하나님 나라의 씨앗이 된다. 개인의 삶 속에서도 정직하게 일하고, 약자를 무시하지 않으며, 차별적인 말을 사용하지 않는 것이 바로 사회정의를 살아내는 신앙이다.

많은 교회가 성공을 신앙의 열매로 오해하곤 한다. 그러나 로메로의 삶은 신앙의 기준이 성공이 아니라 예수를 얼마나 닮아 가는가에 있음을 보여 준다. 그는 눈에 보이는 성취를 이루지 못한 채 죽었지만, 그의 삶은 지금도 전 세계 교회에 영향을 주고 있다.

결국 로메로의 이야기는 사순절을 사는 우리에게 묻는다. 우리의 교회는 편안함을 제공하는 공동체인가, 아니면 세상을 치유하는 공동체인가. 교회는 자신을 위해 존재하지 않는다. 교회는 세상을 향해 보냄 받은 공동체다. 고통받는 사람들 속에서 그리스도의 얼굴을 발견하고, 작은 순종으로 하나님 나라의 씨를 뿌리는 것, 그것이 오늘 우리가 그리스도의 제자로서 걸어가야 할 길인 것이다.

Óscar Arnulfo Romero (1917–1980) was a Catholic priest born in El Salvador who later became the Archbishop of San Salvador. At first, Romero was a quiet cleric who did not challenge the established order. However, when his friend, Father Rutilio Grande, was murdered while standing with poor farmers, Romero awoke to a new reality. He came to realize that Christ is present in the suffering of the people, and his preaching changed. Every Sunday he read aloud the names of those who had been killed, spoke the truth to unjust powers, and made the church a home for the suffering. On March 24, 1980, while celebrating Mass, he was shot and martyred by an assassination squad connected to the military.

Romero’s life changed the direction of the church. He showed clearly whose side the church must stand on. The church must always stand with those who suffer. This is not a political choice but a gospel choice, because this is how Jesus himself lived. Jesus proclaimed good news to the poor, healed the sick, and sat at the table with those who were socially rejected. Therefore, a church that follows Jesus must stand in the same place.

A church is a community that has experienced God’s special grace. When faith stops there, the church gradually turns inward. When faith is reduced to a tool for personal peace and family prosperity, the gospel is no longer a power for the world. Around the church there are still lonely elderly people, immigrants isolated by language barriers, and families living in economic hardship. There are also those who live in fear because of their legal status. Reaching out to them is the form of discipleship we are called to live today.

Another important challenge is the problem of silence. Churches are often accustomed to choosing silence to avoid conflict. There are times when silence helps preserve peace, but silence in the face of injustice hides the gospel. When discrimination, hatred, and indifference toward the weak become part of everyday culture, and the church says nothing, the world cannot see God’s justice through the church. What the church must speak is not political slogans but the values of the gospel: that every person is created in the image of God, that life is precious, that the weak must be protected, and that honesty and justice are the fruits of faith. These must be revealed through the church’s life.

Serving at a local food bank, participating in homeless ministry, helping neighborhood schools, and visiting lonely church members may not look grand, but they become seeds of the kingdom of God. In personal life as well, working honestly, not despising the weak, and refusing to use discriminatory language—this is a faith that lives out social justice.

Many churches misunderstand success as the fruit of faith. But Romero’s life shows that the standard of faith is not success, but how much we are becoming like Jesus. He died without visible achievements, yet his life still influences churches around the world.

In the end, Romero’s story asks those of us who are living through Lent: Is our church a community that provides comfort, or a community that heals the world? The church does not exist for itself. It is a community sent into the world. To discover the face of Christ among those who suffer and to sow the seeds of God’s kingdom through small acts of obedience—this is the path we are called to walk as disciples of Christ today.

Lord, help us to understand
that we are only the ones who sow the seeds,
not the ones who bring everything to completion.
We begin, but we cannot finish.
What we do is only a part of your kingdom.
Lord, enable us to do the good we can
and to do the work that must be done today.
