My Final Pastoral Letter to My Beloved Church Family<\/p>\n

“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens. God has made everything beautiful in its time. \u2026 I know that there is nothing better for people than to be happy and to do good while they live. \u2026 I know that everything God does will endure forever; nothing can be added to it and nothing taken from it.”\u2014 Ecclesiastes 3:1, 12, 14<\/p>\n

Dear Beloved Church Family,<\/p>\n

The time has come for me to leave your side. First and foremost, thank you for your love and your trust. Even though our time together in this recent season was brief, I feel a sense of lightness stepping into retirement, and I am so deeply grateful to be leaving with your blessings. Still, an undeniable wave of sadness washes over me as I prepare to go.<\/p>\n

The past two years have often felt like wandering through a dark maze. When I returned to this church where I had actively served before, I felt the truth of the old poet’s sigh: “The mountains and rivers remain the same, but the heroes are gone.” The people I missed so dearly had either passed away or moved on, leaving an empty, aching space in my heart. Yet, I am endlessly grateful to those of you who remained and continued to do ministry faithfully. Being able to share old memories and experiences with you has been a tremendous comfort to my soul. Only recently did I truly realize that God was not yet finished with God\u2019s work for us!<\/p>\n

The church has always been the very center of my life and the cradle of my soul. As I look back over the years on the eve of my retirement, only two things remain in my heart: profound gratitude and a deep sense of indebtedness. Above all, the greatest teachers of my ministry were you\u2014the countless lay leaders who silently, without seeking name or recognition, served God and Christ\u2019s church alongside me. You are the ones to whom I owe the most.<\/p>\n

In this final season of closing my ministry, the words that have brought me the greatest comfort are from Matthew 11. Pastor Eugene Peterson\u2019s translation in The Message has been a balm to my spirit:<\/p>\n

“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me\u2014watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.<\/p>\n

Looking back, our Lord never once said to me, “Hurry up. Work harder, Seok-Hwan.” Instead, Christ walked quietly beside me when I was weary and struggling, gently holding my hand. Christ adjusted to my breathing, respected my pace, and when I was simply too tired to go on, the Lord stopped with me.<\/p>\n

I have come to realize that when you walk alone, the journey feels endlessly long\u2014but when you walk together, the journey becomes a beautiful story. Walking alone, the burden is heavy; together, it becomes light. When I walked alone, I often missed the scenery, but when we walked together, I could finally see the sky and feel the gentle breeze. Companionship comes first. Ministry comes second. This is the realization that finally dawns on me.<\/p>\n

Even now, the Lord is gently speaking to me: “Now, let us just walk together. This path you are on is no longer a path of success or achievement; it is a path of rest.” So now, taking off the heavy title of “Pastor,” I will spend the rest of my days walking alongside the Lord as simply and joyfully as a little child.<\/p>\n

This coming Sunday will be my final Sunday preaching from the pulpit. Will you come and join me one last time to worship our good God, who has walked alongside me and done His beautiful work through me for the past 36 years?<\/p>\n

Farewell & Retirement Service: Sunday, June 21 at 3:00 PM (Please note: There will be no morning service)<\/p>\n

Moving Day: On June 29, I will move out of the parsonage and settle into my retirement home in Wells, Maine.<\/p>\n

Official End of Tenure: My time as your senior pastor will officially conclude on June 30.<\/p>\n

Soon, all of you will begin a wonderful new chapter of ministry with your new senior pastor, Pastor, Shinjae Lee. Amidst all these transitions, there is one piece of joyful news that will never change: the steadfast love and presence of our Lord Jesus Christ.<\/p>\n

If I have ever been thoughtless toward you, failed to make time for you under the excuse of being “too busy,” or inadvertently caused you any pain, I humbly ask for your generous forgiveness. As I take my leaving steps, I will carefully pack away everything I have learned from you here, the immense love you have shown me, and our beautiful memories, cherishing them for the rest of my life.<\/p>\n

Let us trust in the unchanging presence of God, who walks with us every step of the way. Holy Spirit, come upon our hearts as they overflow with this mixture of sorrow and gratitude!<\/p>\n
