I want to begin this last reflection with a personal confession. There is something my teacher once said that I have never forgotten my whole life.<\/p>\n

\u201cFaith is actually very simple. There is an easy way to know whether your faith is real or not. But it is harder than death. Just ask yourself this: Can you take a loss for the sake of someone else, or not?\u201d<\/p>\n

When I first heard this, I expected something deep and impressive. Instead, it sounded too ordinary and obvious, so I ignored it and lived my life. But as I get older, I realize how painful and true those words are. I became a pastor for the Lord, and I say I do many things for the Lord, but when I look deep inside myself, many things are still for myself.<\/p>\n

I have met many people in the church and in the denomination who say they love God. But it is very hard to find people who are willing to lose something, lower themselves, and sacrifice themselves in ministry or in relationships. And I was one of them. I did not like that about myself. I felt ashamed and even disgusted with myself.<\/p>\n

During this Lent, I meditated on people who lived beyond themselves and gave their lives for others. Bonhoeffer left a secure professor\u2019s job in America and was martyred under Hitler. Archbishop Romero enjoyed parties and high position, but after seeing priests killed while defending the poor, he realized the true meaning of ministry. He preached a simple message, \u201cKilling is not God\u2019s will,\u201d and he was shot and killed. Martin Luther King Jr. spoke against racial discrimination when Billy Graham was advising presidents, and King was eventually assassinated. Rosa Parks was just an ordinary woman who refused racial discrimination on a bus and went to jail, but her small act started a civil rights movement that changed the law. Many Korean immigrants now live benefiting from their sacrifice. Pastor Moon Ik-hwan went in and out of prison many times, called a communist, but he shared the pain of a divided country. Father Lee Tae-seok worked in South Sudan, giving musical instruments to children who held guns, sharing love in the middle of war and disease, and he died at a young age.<\/p>\n

These people were not special from the beginning. They were people like us\u2014afraid, selfish, and sometimes cowardly. But at some point in their lives, they heard the gospel of Jesus. They met Jesus. Their eyes opened, their hearts expanded, and they had courage to do. And God used them as His instruments.<\/p>\n

In families and in churches, when we value one another and lift one another up, we call that love. Between individuals, we call it love, but in society, we call it justice. When someone\u2019s dignity has been broken, restoring that dignity is justice.<\/p>\n

Today is Good Friday, the day we finish Lent and go with the Lord to die. But why do we call this day \u201cGood\u201d Friday? How can the day of death be good? Because no matter how terrible that day was, it had to happen to prepare the joy of Easter. Paradoxically, Good Friday is the day when God\u2019s wrath and God\u2019s mercy met on the cross. That is why Good Friday is such a dark day, and at the same time, such a good day.<\/p>\n

No one likes suffering. We all want peaceful and happy days, not challenges and suffering. But reality is full of pain and difficulties. When we accept our pain and sorrow as part of life, we begin to see that they can be transformed into blessings through the power of love. Even in pain and loss, we can discover the beauty of life. \u201cFaith is a blessed journey where the seed of self-discovery falls and the flower of self-transcendence blooms.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lord, who raises us up after we die, have mercy on us all. Amen.<\/p>\n

\u201cFaith is a journey into darkness, into the unknown. Darkness, mistakes, and trials are our greatest teachers. Success actually teaches us nothing; it only makes us feel good.\u201d<\/p>\n

You shine light in darkness, bring life out of emptiness, reveal hope in despair, speak truth even in condemnation, give freedom in prison-like situations, and give forgiveness instead of punishment.
